1. A balloon catheter device for heating tissue, comprising:
- a catheter shaft constructed for insertion into a patient'"'"'s body,a fluid-inflatable balloon mounted on said shaft, said balloon defining an interior inflation chamber and an exterior surface for engagement with body tissue to be heated, said interior inflation chamber of said balloon being associated with a lumen extending through said shaft for introduction of inflation fluid from a source outside said body to permit said chamber to be filled with said inflation fluid after placement of said balloon catheter in said body,an electrically conductive, resistive pathway located in said interior inflation chamber of said balloon, arranged for heating said exterior surface of said balloon from within said balloon by passage of RF electrical current through said conductive, resistive pathway, said balloon catheter device being constructed to prevent said electrical current from reaching said exterior surface of said balloon,a plurality of electrical conductors for conducting RF electric current at a frequency above about 100 kilohertz, said plurality of conductors extending along the length of said catheter shaft for introducing current from an RF current source to said conductive, resistive pathway, anda sensor constructed to provide a feedback signal to permit delivery of RF current to said pathway to be controlled so that the temperature of said exterior surface of said balloon can in turn be controlled.

Abstract
Device and method for heating tissue, the device having a catheter shaft for insertion into a patient'"'"'s body, a chamber formed by a collapsible balloon mounted on the catheter shaft and filled with an electrically conductive fluid, two or more electrical contacts enclosed within the chamber, a power supply for applying an electrical potential to the contacts, and a two or more conductors for connecting each of the contacts to the power supply. The fluid is heated on the basis of I2 R losses by a radio frequency electric current flowing between the electrodes, and the fluid in turn heats the surrounding tissue by heat transfer through the wall of the chamber. According to the method, the apparatus is inserted into the patient'"'"'s body, the chamber is filled with an electrically conductive fluid, and an electrical potential is applied to the contacts. The apparatus functions as a temperature source. A thermister sensor in the balloon or in contact with tissue responds to the heating effect to control the application of the current. Advantageously, by periodic sensing of temperature, and application of controlled rf power, a preset constant temperature is maintained at the selected sensing point, either at the internal body site or the liquid within the balloon. In this way carefully controlled therapy can be conducted at constant temperature.

7. A method for heating tissue, comprising the steps of:

providing a catheter device comprising a catheter shaft constructed for insertion into a patient'"'"'s body, a balloon mounted on said shaft, said balloon defining an interior inflation chamber and an exterior surface, an electrically conductive, resistive pathway located in said interior inflation chamber of said balloon, a plurality of electrical conductors extending along the length of said catheter shaft to said conductive, resistive pathway, and a sensor constructed to provide a feedback signal to permit delivery of RF current to said pathway to be controlled, placing said balloon catheter in said body, inflating said balloon by introducing inflation fluid from a source outside said body through a lumen extending through said shaft to fill said interior inflation chamber, engaging body tissue with said exterior surface of said balloon, heating said exterior surface of said balloon from within said balloon by passing RF electrical current at a frequency above about 100 kilohertz from an RF current source through said electrical conductors and through said conductive, resistive pathway, said electrical current being prevented from reaching said exterior surface of said balloon, and providing a feedback signal from said sensor to permit delivery of RF current to said pathway to be controlled so that the temperature of said exterior surface of said balloon can in turn be controlled. - View Dependent Claims (8)

a catheter shaft constructed for insertion into a patient'"'"'s body, a fluid-inflatable balloon mounted on said shaft, said balloon defining an interior inflation chamber and an exterior surface for engagement with body tissue to be heated, said interior inflation chamber of said balloon being associated with a lumen extending through said shaft for introduction of inflation fluid from a source outside said body to permit said chamber to be filled with said inflation fluid after placement of said balloon catheter in said body, an electrically conductive, resistive pathway located in said interior inflation chamber of said balloon, arranged for heating said exterior surface of said balloon from within said balloon by passage of RF electrical current through said conductive, resistive pathway, said balloon catheter device being constructed to prevent said electrical current from reaching said exterior surface of said balloon while said exterior surface of said balloon is heated with an intensity and duration sufficient to destroy said undesired cells, a plurality of electrical conductors for conducting RF electric current at a frequency above about 100 kilohertz, said plurality of conductors extending along the length of said catheter shaft for introducing current from an RF current source to said conductive, resistive pathway, and a sensor constructed to provide a feedback signal to permit delivery of RF current to said pathway to be controlled so that the temperature of said exterior surface of said balloon can in turn be controlled.
