1. A method of completing an ISDN audio and video call comprising the steps of:

  • establishing an initial voice grade audio connection from a caller'"'"'s ISDN video phone served by an ISDN subscriber loop having at least first and second logical bearer channels and a logical signaling channel, to a called party'"'"'s end-user device, said connection being established through said first logical bearer channel of said loop.in response to a signal indicating that said end-user device is an ISDN videophone, establishing an ISDN audio and video connection between said caller and said called party using said second logical bearer channel of said loop while said initial audio connection is still maintained active;

    switching audio signals from said initial audio connection of said first logical bearer channel to said ISDN audio and video connection of said second logical bearer such that a graceful transition of said audio signals from said first logical bearer channel to said second logical bearer is achieved in a manner that is transparent to users; and

    tearing down said initial audio connection.
