Abstract

Improvements relating to railroad telemetry and control system address problems in compatibility between HOT and EOT units, implement an automatic UDE location procedure, and automate calibration of EOT units. An improved two way protocol that allows EOT units having different code formats to be used with a HOT unit. A method is implemented by a HOT unit, cooperating with an EOT unit, for locating a fault which causes a UDE brake operation. An automatic calibration procedure for the EOT unit that does not require the operator to have access to the electronic circuitry.

Claims

1. An End of Train (EOT) and Head of Train (HOT) railroad telemetry system comprising:

first means at a HOT unit for automatically detecting whether an EOT unit attached to the rear of a train is a one-way or two-way device; and

second means at the HOT unit for detecting the particular code format transmitted by the EOT unit, wherein said first means comprises;

polling means at the HOT unit for polling the EOT unit;

receiving means at the HOT unit for receiving a response from the EOT unit when polled; and

detection means at the HOT unit responsive to the receiving means for deciding, based on receiving or not receiving a response from said EOT unit, whether said EOT unit is a one-way or two-way device.

2. The system recited in claim 1 wherein said second means further comprises:

first selection means responsive to a decision by said detection means that the EOT unit is a two-way device for interpreting discretionary bits in a received data message and selecting one of a plurality of code formats as the code format transmitted by the EOT unit; and

second selection means responsive to a decision by said detection means that the EOT unit is a one-way device for interpreting discretionary bits in a received data message and selecting one of a plurality of code formats as the code format transmitted by said EOT unit.

3. The system recited in claim 1 further comprising automatic calibration means at the EOT unit for calibrating a pressure sensor to a standard air pressure.

4. The system recited in claim 1 wherein said first means comprises:

code identification input means for receiving and storing identification information of the EOT unit; and

memory means addressed by said identification information for reading out information identifying said EOT unit as a one-way or two-way device and the particular code format transmitted by the EOT unit.

5. The system recited in claim 4 wherein said second means further comprises:

first selection means responsive to a decision by said detection means that the EOT unit is a two-way device for interpreting discretionary bits in a received data message and selecting one of a plurality of code formats as the code format transmitted by said EOT unit; and

second selection means responsive to a decision by said detection means that the EOT unit is a one-way device for interpreting discretionary bits in a received data message and selecting one of a plurality of code formats as the code format transmitted by the EOT unit.

6. The system recited in claim 1 wherein the EOT unit is a two-way unit, further comprising HOT detection means at the two-way EOT unit for automatically establishing what type of HOT unit with which the EOT unit is in communication.

7. The system recited in claim 6 wherein the HOT detection means at the two-way EOT unit recognizes an additional Front-to-Rear polling transmission from the HOT unit as part of a communications protocol.

8. The system recited in claim 1 wherein said EOT unit includes first time stamp means for generating and transmitting a first time stamp to the HOT unit in the event of an Undesired Emergency (UDE) event.

The system recited in claim 8 wherein the HOT and EOT units communicate with a protocol including discretionary bits which are used in normal transmissions from the EOT unit to the HOT unit for battery status or condition information, said EOT unit including means for alternatively using said discretionary bits for Rear-to-Front transmission as said time stamp to be transmitted from the EOT unit to the HOT unit in the event of an Undesired Emergency (UDE) event.

10. The system recited in claim 8 further comprising at the HOT unit:

second time stamp means for generating a second time stamp; and

computing means for computing the time differential between the first and second time stamps generated at the EOT and HOT units to automatically calculate an approximate location where the UDE originated.

11. A communication protocol method used in End of Train (EOT) and Head of Train (HOT) railroad telemetry comprising the steps of:

the HOT unit polling said EOT unit;

the HOT unit waiting to receive a response from said EOT unit when polled;

the HOT unit deciding, based on receiving or not receiving a response from said EOT unit, whether said EOT unit is a one-way or two-way device, thereby automatically detecting whether an EOT unit is attached to the rear of a train is a one-way or two-way device; and

detecting by the HOT unit the particular code format transmitted by the EOT unit.

12. The method recited in claim 11 further comprising the steps of:

responsive to a decision that the EOT unit is a two-way device, interpreting discretionary bits in a received data message and selecting one of a plurality of code formats as the code format transmitted by said EOT unit; and

responsive to a decision that the EOT unit is a one-way device, interpreting discretionary bits in a received data message and selecting one of a plurality of code formats as the code format transmitted by said EOT unit.

13. The method recited in claim 11 wherein said EOT unit includes motion detection means and said EOT unit transmits a data message including motion information, said method performed by said HOT unit further comprising the steps of:

detecting from said motion information a change in motion and determining whether there is motion and, if so, displaying an indication of motion but, if not, displaying an indication of no motion; and

determining whether a direction bit in said motion information has been set and, if so, displaying an indication that detected motion is in a first direction but if said direction bit is not set, determining whether, for the EOT unit, the direction bit is active and, if so, displaying an indication that detected motion is in a second direction.

14. The method recited in claim 11 wherein said step of detecting the particular code format comprises the steps of:

receiving and storing EOT identification information in a code identification input device in the HOT unit; and

using said EOT identification information for reading out information prestored in a memory device in said HOT unit, said prestored information identifying said EOT unit as a one-way or two-way device and providing the particular code format transmitted by the EOT unit.

15. The method recited in claim 14 further comprising the steps of:

responsive to a decision that the EOT unit is a two-way device, interpreting discretionary bits in a received data message and selecting one of a plurality of code formats as the code format transmitted by said EOT unit; and

responsive to a decision that the EOT unit is a one-way device, interpreting discretionary bits in a received data message and selecting one of a plurality of code formats as the code format transmitted by said EOT unit.

16. An End of Train (EOT) unit for use with a Head of Train (HOT) unit in a railroad telemetry system wherein the HOT unit may be either a one-way or two-way communication device, said EOT unit being a two-way communication device and comprising:

receiving means for receiving polling transmissions from a two-way HOT unit;

timing means for determining whether a polling transmission is received from the HOT unit within a predetermined period of time; and

detection means responsive to said receiving means and said timing means for automatically establishing whether the HOT unit with which the EOT is in communication is a one-way or a two-way device.

17. A procedure implemented in an End of Train (HOT) unit for use with a Head of Train (HOT) unit in a railroad telemetry system wherein the HOT unit may be either a one-way or two-way communication device, said EOT unit being a two-way communication device and said procedure comprising the steps of:

on power up, waiting a predetermined period of time to receive a polling transmission from a two-way HOT unit; and

determining that the HOT unit is a two-way device if a polling transmission is received within said predetermined period of time, but if a polling transmission is not received within said predetermined period of time, determining that the HOT unit is a one-way device; and

using a first communication protocol for transmitting data to the HOT device if the HOT device is determined to be a two-way device and using a second communication protocol if the HOT device is determined to be a one-way device.
