Abstract

A computer-implemented method and apparatus that automates the entry, modification, and verification of timing diagrams for electrical circuits. The computer-implemented method and apparatus also provides an automated mechanism for analyzing these timing diagrams and verifying that the timing relationships specified for the circuit are met using the parts selected for the circuit.

Claims

1. An apparatus for constructing timing diagrams on a computer having a monitor to model electrical circuits, comprising:

parameter spreadsheet means, performed by the computer, for accepting one or more parameters defining a timing diagram into a spreadsheet displayed on the monitor, wherein the spreadsheet comprises one or more intersecting rows and columns, each of the rows comprises one of the parameters, and the columns identify a minimum value for the parameter and a maximum value for the parameter; and

timing diagram window means, performed by the computer, for displaying the timing diagram on the monitor of the computer in response to the parameters accepted into the spreadsheet displayed on the monitor, wherein the spreadsheet and the timing diagram are linked so that changes in the spreadsheet are reflected in the timing diagram.

2. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the columns identify one or more of the following:

a row number, a row type, a name for the parameter, a formula for the parameter, a margin for the parameter, and a comment describing the parameter.

3. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein one of the parameters comprises a delay, the timing diagram comprises at least one waveform, the waveform comprises one or more edges, and the delay defines a cause and effect relationship between the edges and a time between the edges.

4. The apparatus of claim 3, further comprising means for automatically maintaining a toggle pattern as edges are added to the waveform.

5. The apparatus of claim 3, wherein the time comprises minimum and maximum delay values.

6. The apparatus of claim 5, wherein the minimum and maximum delay values define an uncertainty region representing a range of possible time values for an occurrence of a second edge, and the apparatus further comprises means for propagating and accumulating uncertainty regions through a plurality of edges connected by delays.

7. The apparatus of claim 6, further comprising means for calculating an uncertainty region for an edge that is a target of one or more delays.

8. The apparatus of claim 7, wherein one of the parameters comprises a constraint, and the constraint defines an allowable time between the edges in the waveform.

9. The apparatus of claim 8, wherein the constraint comprises minimum and maximum allowable time values.

10. The apparatus of claim 9, further comprising means for calculating a timing margin by determining a difference between the minimum and maximum allowable time values between two edges as defined by the constraint and the minimum and maximum delay values between the two edges as calculated by the means for propagating and accumulating uncertainty regions as defined by the delays.

11. The apparatus of claim 10, further comprising means for automatically removing common delays from the calculation of the timing margin.

12. The apparatus of claim 10, wherein one of the parameters comprises a skew between two of the waveforms and the apparatus further comprises means for adjusting the calculated timing margin based on the skew.

13. The apparatus of claim 8, further comprising means for analyzing the timing diagram and means for verifying that each constraint is satisfied.

14. The apparatus of claim 8, wherein the timing diagram window means further comprises means for formatting the timing diagram displayed on the monitor so that horizontal representations of the delays and constraints do not overlap.

15. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the parameter spreadsheet means further comprises means for accepting a modification to one of the parameters, and the timing diagram window means further comprises means for re-drawing the timing diagram displayed on the monitor to reflect the modification.

16. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the timing diagram window means further comprises means for accepting a modification to the timing diagram displayed on the monitor, and the parameter spreadsheet means further comprises means for changing one or more of the parameters in the spreadsheet to reflect the modification.

17. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the timing diagram window means further comprises means for affixing and displaying a textual description on the timing diagram displayed on the monitor in a position relative to an edge in a waveform of the timing diagram.

18. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the parameter spreadsheet means further comprises means for specifying one or more of the parameters using a formula that is comprised of one or more elements selected from a group comprising constants, operators, variables, and functions.

19. The apparatus of claim 18, wherein the parameter spreadsheet means further comprises means for evaluating the formula using a two-value algebra, such that each element has both a minimum value and a maximum value.

20. The apparatus of claim 19, wherein the formula has both a minimum value and a maximum value.

21. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the spreadsheet and the timing diagram are linked so that changes in the timing diagram are reflected in the spreadsheet.

22. A method of constructing timing diagrams on a computer having a monitor to model electrical circuits, comprising the steps of:

accepting one or more parameters defining a timing diagram into a spreadsheet displayed on the monitor coupled to the computer, wherein the spreadsheet comprises one or more intersecting rows and columns, each of the rows comprising one of the parameters, and the columns identify a minimum value for the parameter and a maximum value for the parameter; and

displaying the timing diagram on the monitor of the computer in response to the parameters accepted into the spreadsheet displayed on the monitor, wherein the spreadsheet and the timing diagram are linked so that changes in the spreadsheet are reflected in the timing diagram.

23. The method of claim 22, wherein the columns identify one or more of the following:

a row number, a row type, a name for the parameter, a formula for the parameter, a margin for the parameter, and a comment describing the parameter.

24. The method of claim 22, wherein one of the parameters comprises a delay, the timing diagram comprises at least one waveform, the waveform comprises one or more edges, and the delay defines a cause and effect relationship between the edges and a time between the edges.

25. The method of claim 24, wherein the time comprises minimum and maximum delay values.

26. The method of claim 25, wherein the minimum and maximum delay values define an uncertainty region representing a range of possible time values for an occurrence of a second edge, and the method further comprises the step of propagating and accumulating uncertainty regions through a plurality of edges connected by delays.

27. The method of claim 26, further comprising the step of calculating an uncertainty region for an edge that is a target of one or more delays.

28. The method of claim 27, wherein one of the parameters comprises a constraint, and the constraint defines an allowable time between the edges in the waveform.

29. The method of claim 28, wherein the constraint comprises minimum and maximum allowable time values.

30. The method of claim 29, further comprising the step of calculating a timing margin by determining a difference between the minimum and maximum allowable time values between two edges as defined by the constraint and the minimum and maximum delay values between the two edges as calculated by the step of propagating and accumulating uncertainty regions as defined by the delays.

31. The method of claim 30, further comprising the step of automatically removing common delays from the calculation of the timing margin.

32. The method of claim 30, wherein one of the parameters comprises a skew between two of the waveforms and the method further comprises the step of adjusting the calculated timing margin based on the skew.

33. The method of claim 28, further comprising the step of analyzing the timing diagram and verifying that each constraint is satisfied.

34. The method of claim 28, wherein the displaying step further comprises the step of formatting the timing diagram displayed on the monitor so that horizontal representations of the delays and constraints do not overlap.

35. The method of claim 22, further comprising the step of automatically maintaining a toggle pattern as edges are added to the waveform.

36. The method of claim 22, wherein the accepting step further comprises the step of accepting a modification to one of the parameters, and the displaying step further comprises the step of re-drawing the timing diagram displayed on the monitor to reflect the modification.

37. The method of claim 22, wherein the displaying step further comprises the step of accepting a modification to the timing diagram displayed on the monitor, and the accepting step further comprises the step of changing one or more of the parameters in the spreadsheet to reflect the modification.

38. The apparatus of claim 22, wherein the displaying step further comprises the step for affixing and displaying a textual description on the timing diagram displayed on the monitor in a position relative to an edge in a waveform of the timing diagram.

39. The method of claim 22, wherein the accepting step further comprises the step of specifying one or more of the parameters using a formula that is comprised of one or more elements selected from a group comprising constants, operators, variables, and functions.

40. The method of claim 39, wherein the accepting step further comprises the step of evaluating the formula using a two-value algebra, such that each element has both a minimum value and a maximum value.

41. The method of claim 40, wherein the formula has both a minimum value and a maximum value.

42. The method of claim 22, wherein the spreadsheet and the timing diagram are linked so that changes in the timing diagram are reflected in the spreadsheet.
