1. Apparatus for sensing the occurrence of a disturbance in the vicinity of a localized portion of an optical fiber, said apparatus comprisingmeans for applying multiple spaced-apart consistently polarized optical pulses to the input end of said fiber, andmeans for synchronously detecting optical signals of a particular polarization that are backscattered from said localized portion to said input end, wherein said synchronous detection is carried out at a frequency that is equal to the frequency of said disturbance.
