1. A diffuse infrared communication method used in a room of indeterminate size, for communication between a plurality of nodes, the method comprising the steps of:
- a. each node determining if there is at least one repeater present in the room;
b. if there is not at least one repeater present in the room, then each node configuring itself to send and receive communications directly with other nodes present in the room; and
c. if there is at least one repeater present in the room, then each node configuring itself to send and receive communications with other nodes only through one or more repeaters.

Abstract
A diffuse infrared communication link provides for communication directly between nodes each having a transceiver. A repeater may be present to facilitate communication. Each node is automatically reconfigurable between operation with or without a repeater. When a repeater is present each node automatically ignores any transmission by another node.

A diffuse infrared communication system for use in a room of indeterminate size for communicating between a plurality of nodes, each node capable of configuring itself to communicate with other nodes through a repeater when at lease one repeater is present in the room or configuring itself to communicate directly with other nodes when no repeater is present in the room, and each repeater capable of communicating with both nodes and repeaters.
