Abstract

A thin film multi-layered electrolyte for a rechargeable electrochemical cell, and a rechargeable electrochemical cell including said electrolyte. The multi-layered electrolyte consists of a primary electrolyte material having at least one secondary electrolyte material disposed on one surface thereof. The secondary electrolyte material should be selected so as to have a potential stability window sufficient to prevent decomposition of the primary electrolyte, while preventing chemical reactions leading to the formation of ionically non-conducting materials on the surface of the electrodes of the electrochemical cell. A rechargeable electrochemical cell is made by disposing the multi-layered electrolyte material between a positive and negative electrode.

Claims

1. A multilayered electrolyte for use in an electrochemical cell, comprising:

a primary electrolyte layer including at least a polymer substrate and an active ingredient impregnated therein; and

a secondary electrolyte disposed on at least one side of said layer of primary electrolyte wherein said secondary electrolyte is fabricated of a material different than said primary electrolyte.

2. An electrolyte as defined in claim 1, wherein said secondary electrolyte is disposed on both sides of said primary electrolyte.

3. An electrolyte as defined in claim 2, wherein the secondary electrolyte disposed on one side of said primary electrolyte is different than the secondary electrolyte disposed on the second side of said primary electrolyte.

4. An electrolyte as defined in claim 1, wherein said secondary electrolyte has a potential stability window which overlaps the potential stability window of the primary electrolyte.

5. An electrolyte as defined in claim 1, wherein said primary electrolyte is fabricated of a polymeric material impregnated with a lithiated salt and a solvent.

6. An electrolyte as defined in claim 1, wherein said secondary electrolyte is fabricated of a material selected from the group consisting of Li(Al₂ O₃),LiI [. X CH₃ OH], Li₃ N, LiF, [Li₃ PO₄ (N)], LiAlEt₄, [Li-S based glasses], and combinations thereof.

7. A lithium polymer electrochemical cell, comprising:

a lithium containing negative electrode;

a positive electrode fabricated of a material having a high electrode potential versus lithium; and

a multi-layered electrolyte operatively disposed between said negative and said positive electrodes, said multilayered electrolyte including a primary electrolyte layer and at least one secondary electrolyte layer, said primary electrolyte layer being fabricated of a material different than said secondary electrolyte layer.

8. A lithium polymer electrochemical cell as defined in claim 7, wherein said multilayered electrolyte includes a primary electrolyte layer operatively disposed between two layers of said secondary electrolyte.

9. A lithium polymer electrochemical cell as defined in claim 8, wherein said two secondary electrolyte layers are fabricated of different materials.

A lithium polymer electrochemical cell as defined in claim 9, wherein the secondary electrolyte disposed between the primary electrolyte and the positive electrode has a potential stability window low enough to substantially prevent decomposition of the primary electrolyte, and high enough to be stable at the highest potential of the positive electrode.

11. A lithium polymer electrochemical cell as defined in claim 9, wherein said secondary electrolyte disposed between said primary electrolyte and said positive electrode is fabricated from LiF[, Li₃ PO₄ (N), Li-S based glasses, and combinations thereof].

12. A lithium polymer electrochemical cell as defined in claim 9, wherein the secondary electrolyte disposed between the primary electrolyte and the negative electrode is stable at unity activity with lithium.

A lithium polymer electrochemical cell as defined in claim 12 wherein the secondary electrolyte disposed between said primary electrolyte and said negative electrode is further adapted to have a potential stability window that overlaps the lower end of the primary electrolyte potential stability window.

A lithium polymer electrochemical cell as defined in claim 13, wherein said secondary electrolyte disposed between said primary electrolyte and said negative electrode is fabricated from a material selected from the group consisting LiAlEt₄, LiI(A1₂ O₃), [LiI. X CH₃ OH], Li₃ N, LiI, and combinations thereof.

15. A multilayered electrolyte for use in a rechargeable electrochemical cell including negative and positive electrodes, said multilayered electrolyte comprising:

a primary electrolyte layer including at least a polymeric substrate having an active species impregnated therein;

a first secondary electrolyte layer disposed between, and in contact with, said negative electrode and said primary electrolyte, said first secondary electrolyte layer being fabricated of a material which is different than said primary electrolyte, and which is chemically stable in the presence of said negative electrode; and

a second secondary electrolyte layer disposed between, and in contact with, said positive electrode and said primary electrolyte, said second secondary electrolyte layer being fabricated of a material chemically stable at the operating potentials of said positive electrode, and said first and second secondary electrolytes being fabricated of different materials.

16. An electrolyte as in claim 15, wherein said primary electrolyte is fabricated of a polymeric material impregnated with a lithiated salt and a solvent.

17. A multilayered electrolyte as defined in claim 15, wherein said secondary electrolyte disposed between said primary electrolyte and said positive electrode is fabricated from LiF[, Li₃ PO₄ (N), Li-S based glasses, and combinations thereof].

18. A multilayered electrolyte as defined in claim 15, wherein said secondary electrolyte disposed between said primary electrolyte and said negative electrode is fabricated from a material selected from the group consisting LiAlEt₄, LiI(A1₂ O₃), [LiI. X CH₃ OH,]Li₃ N, LiI, and combinations thereof.
