Universal mode vascular catheter system
First Claim
1. A system for performing an intravascular procedure, comprising:
- a catheter shaft having a proximal portion with a proximal end and a distal portion with a distal end;
a guidewire lumen in said shaft extending from the proximal end to the distal end, said guidewire lumen having an outside wall;
a proximal opening into said guidewire lumen configured for insertion of a guidewire therethrough;
a side port in the outside wall of said guidewire lumen and distal to said proximal opening, said side port configured for the insertion of a guidewire therethrough;
means mounted on the distal portion of said catheter shaft for performing an intravascular procedure;
a connector mounted in a fixed position on the proximal portion of said catheter shaft, said connector having at least a first channel and a second channel, wherein at least one of said channels encircles said catheter shaft and wherein at least one of said channels forms an access channel to said guidewire lumen, said connector configured to be separated at least in part along a predetermined path extending continuously along the access channel direction and thereby removed at least in part from said catheter shaft; and
guidewire removing means extending from said access channel along said outside wire of said guide wire lumen in the direction of said side port.

Abstract
A multi-lumen vascular catheter for use with a guidewire, comprising a longitudinally extending catheter shaft having a proximal end and a distal end and having at least first and second lumens extending distally from the proximal end, each of the lumens having a proximal opening, wherein the first lumen is adapted to receive a guidewire, and a first connector at the proximal end of the catheter providing a first channel communicating with the interior of the first lumen for insertion of a guidewire therethrough, the connector including means for permitting a guidewire extending longitudinally through the first channel into the first lumen to be moved laterally out of the first channel through the first connector beginning at the proximal end of the first connector. The catheter may be an angioplasty catheter. Also disclosed are methods for using the catheter and for exchanging catheters and guidewires during vascular catheterization procedures.
