1. A faucet for discharging water automatically and manually comprising:
- a housing section having at least one water inlet port and at least one water outlet port, said housing section supporting a single flow control valve mechanism movable between an open position wherein said valve mechanism establishes a flow path between said inlet and outlet ports, and a closed position wherein said valve mechanism blocks said flow path between said inlet and outlet ports;
a discharge spout in communication with said housing section outlet ports;
a top section mounted above said housing section and including biasing means operatively connected to said valve mechanism to move said valve mechanism toward said closed position;
a manual actuation mechanism mounted above said top section and operatively associated with said valve mechanism to operate said valve mechanism, said manual actuation mechanism comprising a handle pivotally connected to said top section, and a collar operatively associated with said handle and said valve mechanism such that said valve mechanism is movable relative to said collar during automatic actuation and is movable with said collar during manual actuation; and
an electrically operated automatic actuation mechanism mounted below said housing section and operatively associated with said valve mechanism to operate said valve mechanism independently of said manual actuation mechanism.

Abstract
A faucet for discharging water automatically or manually includes a body which supports a single flow control valve mechanism, a manual actuation mechanism which operates the flow control valve mechanism, and an electrical actuation mechanism which operates the flow control valve mechanism independently of the automatic actuation mechanism. The faucet may be centrally mounted behind two adjacent sink bowls and positionable over each of the bowls to discharge water. Electrical detection means mounted behind one of the bowls detects the presence of a user of that bowl and automatically actuates the faucet in response thereto.

5. A sink bowl arrangement comprising:
-
two adjacent sink bowls for receiving, holding and draining water; a faucet for discharging water automatically or manually positionable over each of said bowls to discharge water, said faucet comprising a body supporting a single flow control valve mechanism, a manual actuation mechanism operatively associated with said flow control valve mechanism to operate said flow control valve mechanism, and an electrically operated automatic actuation mechanism operatively associated with said flow control valve mechanism to operate said flow control valve mechanism independently of said manual actuation mechanism; and detection means positioned relative to said sink bowls to create a detection zone over only one of said bowls, said detection means operable to energize said automatic actuation mechanism upon penetration of said detection zone by a stimulus.

- 6. A sink bowl arrangement as claimed in claim 6 wherein said flow control mechanism includes a sleeve in said body defining at least one inlet port and one outlet port, and a valve member within said sleeve movable between a closed position in which said valve member separates said inlet port from said outlet port and at least one open position in which said inlet port and said outlet port are in fluid communication, said automatic actuation mechanism being connected to said valve member and operable to move said valve member between said closed position and an open position, said manual actuation mechanism being connected to said valve member and operable to move said valve member from said closed position toward said open position.

9. A sink bowl arrangement comprising:
-
two adjacent sink bowls for receiving, holding and draining water; a manually and automatically actuatable faucet positionable over each of said bowls to discharge water; and detection means positioned relative to said sink bowls to create a detection zone over only one of said bowls, said bowls to discharge water; and
detection means operable to energize said automatic actuation mechanism only upon penetration of said detection zone by a stimulus.
