Abstract

A liquid gauging system for a liquid container, the system comprising sensor means for producing a first electromagnetic signal that corresponds to liquid quantity in the container, and remote interrogation means for receiving the first electromagnetic signal and producing a system output that corresponds to the liquid quantity; the sensor means being energized by a second electromagnetic signal transmitted by the remote interrogation means.

Claims

1. A liquid gauging system for use with a liquid container, the system comprising sensor means for producing a first electromagnetic signal based on liquid quantity in the container, and remote interrogation means for receiving said first electromagnetic signal and producing an output that is related to the liquid quatity;

said sensor means being energized in response to a second electromagnetic signal transmitted by said remote interrogation means.

2. The system according to claim 1 wherein said remote means comprises a hand held unit.

3. The system according to claim 2 wherein the container is an aircraft fuel tank and said sensor means comprises a dripstick.

4. The system according to claim 1 wherein said sensor means comprises a dripstick having a magnetoresistive element that varies in relation to liquid level in the container.

5. The system according to claim 4 wherein said sensor means further comprises light source means for producing an encoded electromagnetic signal based on liquid level.

6. The system according to claim 5 wherein said electromagnetic signal is produced by a light source means that modulates a light beam in relation to liquid level in the container.

7. The system according to claim 6 wherein said modulated light beam is a pulsed light signal having a series of pulses with a time displacement that corresponds to liquid level in the container.

8. The system according to claim 5 wherein said encoded electromagnetic signal includes aircraft and sensor identification data.

9. The system according to claim 7 wherein said remote interrogation means comprises means for demodulating said light beam to produce a system output corresponding to liquid level in the container.

10. The system according to claim 1 wherein said remote interrogation means comprises means for transmitting said second electromagnetic signal to said sensor means, said sensor means comprising transducer means for converting said second electromagnetic signal into electrical energy.

11. The system according to claim 10 wherein said sensor means is substantially deenergized prior to receiving said second electromagnetic signal.

12. The system according to claim 11 wherein said first and second electromagnetic signals are transmitted concurrently.

13. The system according to claim 11 wherein said first electromagnetic signal is transmitted to said remote means after said second electromagnetic signal is discontinued.

14. The system according to claim 1 further comprising a plurality of said sensor means disposed at respective positions in the container, said plurality of sensor means being individually accessible to said remote interrogation means.

15. The system according to claim 1 wherein said remote interrogation means transmits and receives electromagnetic energy through air with said sensor means.

16. A method for remotely detecting liquid quantity and/or level in a container comprising the steps of:

a. producing a first electromagnetic signal and transmitting said first electromagnetic signal to a sensor that produces an output related to liquid quantity in the container;

b. using said first electromagnetic signal to energize said sensor;

c. producing a second electromagnetic signal based on said sensor output; and

d. transmitting said second electromagnetic signal to a remote detector and producing an output in response thereto.

17. The method of claim 16 wherein the step of producing a second electromagnetic signal comprises the step of modulating a beam of light in relation to liquid level in the container.

18. The method of claim 17 wherein the step of producing said first electromagnetic signal and the step of detecting said second electromagnetic are performed using a remote hand held unit.

19. The method of claim 18 as used for fuel gauging of aircraft fuel tanks.

20. Apparatus for interrogating a liquid quantity sensor associated with a liquid container comprising sensor control means coupled to the sensor for producing a first electromagnetic signal based on sensor information, said sensor control means including means for detecting a second electromagnetic signal to couple electrical energy used to energize the sensor and said sensor control means, and remote control means for receiving said first electromagnetic signal and producing an output based on the sensor information.

21. The apparatus according to claim 20 wherein said sensor control means comprises output means for transmitting an encoded light signal to said remote control means, said output means comprising means for encoding sensor, aircraft and liquid quantity data.

22. The apparatus according to claim 21 wherein said output means transmits sensor and aircraft data before liquid quantity data.

23. The apparatus according to claim 20 wherein said remote control means is adapted for interrogating a plurality of fuel level sensors on an aircraft.

24. The apparatus according to claim 23 wherein each of said fuel level sensors comprises a dripstick having a magnetoresistive element that changes electrical resistance in response to movement of a float at the fuel surface.

25. The apparatus of claim 24 wherein said remote control means comprises means for determining a percent immersion of a dripstick in the fuel.

26. The apparatus of claim 25 wherein said dripstick is adapted for manual reading in addition to electronic reading by said apparatus.

27. The apparatus of claim 20 wherein said sensor control means comprises means for converting said second electromagnetic signal into electrical energy used by the sensor and sensor control means.

28. Apparatus for remotely interrogating a sensor that produces a sensor output comprising sensor control means coupled to the sensor for producing a first electromagnetic signal based on the sensor output, and remote control means for transmitting a second electromagnetic signal to said sensor control means, said sensor control means comprising means for converting said second electromagnetic signal to electrical energy used to energize the sensor and said sensor control means.

29. The apparatus of claim 28 wherein said remote control means further comprises means for receiving said first electromagnetic signal and producing an output based on the sensor output.

30. Apparatus for remotely detecting liquid quantity or level in a container comprising sensor means associated with the container for detecting liquid quantity therein, and a remote interrogation means for producing a first optical signal that energizes said sensor means;

said sensor means producing a second optical signal based on liquid quantity in the container;

said remote means detecting said second optical signal and converting it to an output based on liquid quantity in the container.

31. Apparatus for interrogating a liquid quantity sensor associated with a liquid container comprising sensor control means coupled to the sensor for producing a first electromagnetic signal based on sensor information, and a mobile remote control means for causing an electromagnetic signal to be emitted and for receiving said first electromagnetic signal and producing an output based on the sensor information.

32. The apparatus of claim 31 wherein said electromagnetic energy is transmitted through air to said remote control unit.

33. The apparatus of claim 31 wherein said mobile remote control means comprises a hand held unit.

34. The apparatus of claim 32 wherein the sensor is disposed on an aircraft fuel tank for measuring variable fuel levels in the tank.

35. A gauging apparatus for measuring liquid quantity in a container comprising:

a dripstick disposed in a housing that can be manually withdrawn from the container to obtain a visual reading of the liquid quantity;

a sensor disposed in said housing that produces an output related to the liquid quantity; and

means for remotely electromagnetically interrogating the sensor to determine liquid quantity in the container.

36. The apparatus of claim 35 further comprising a magnetic float that is slidably disposed with respect to the housing so that the float position corresponds to the liquid level in the container, wherein said sensor and said dripstick operate to determine said float position.

37. The apparatus of claim 35 wherein said interrogating means comprises a remote control device that determines the sensor output by transmitting and receiving electromagnetic energy with said sensor.

38. The apparatus of claim 37 wherein said remote control device comprises a hand held unit, and said dripstick, housing and sensor are disposed in an aircraft fuel tank so that the sensor can be interrogated from the ground using the hand held unit without a direct mechanical connection therebetween.

39. The apparatus of claim 37 wherein said sensor comprises means for converting electromagnetic energy received from said remote control device into electrical energy used to energize said sensor, said sensor being substantially deenergized when not being interrogated by said remote control device.
