Remote control system for door locks
First Claim
1. Apparatus operative to control access to a vehicle, said apparatus comprisingreceiver means for receiving access request signals, memory means for storing one or more access authorization codes representative of access request signals, the receipt of which is used to control access to said vehicle, said memory means having therein adequate storage for storing at least two different access authorization codes at the same time, means for evaluating said access request signals in accordance with said access authorization codes and for controlling access to said vehicle in accordance with said evaluation, andfield programming means for providing programming periods for storing new access authorization codes in said memory means only during a said programming period, said field programming means being operative to automatically clear all of the old access authorization codes from said memory means during said programming period when a new access authorization code is stored, whereby, at the conclusion of said programming period, said memory means contains only those said access authorization codes which were presented during said programming period.

Abstract
A remote control system which includes (a) a receiver unit adapted to be fixedly mounted on a motor vehicle having at least one door lock with a first locked condition and a second unlocked condition and having means for receiving a coded signal including a code portion of binary bits, memory means for storing a first code of binary bits, means for comparing the code portion of a received coded signal with the first code and means for shifting the controlled device to one of the conditions upon the comparison match between the code portion of a received signal and the stored first code and (b) a transmitting unit for transmitting the stored second code of binary bits when the door lock is to be shifted into one of its conditions. In this system the invention involves the improvement wherein the coding of the second code set into the transmitter is a unique group of binary bits and the receiver unit includes a field programming arrangement for setting the first code of the receiver unit to the unique group of binary bits in the transmitting unit by using the signal from the transmitting unit as received by the receiver unit. In accordance with this improvement, the first code of the receiver unit is set to the second code of the transmitting unit in the field and may be changed from one code to another code upon authorized use of a second transmitting unit having its own unique code.

14. A receiver for use in a remote control system which includes a plurality of transmitters that each transmit a coded signal, said receiver being operable to generate a control signal for effecting performance of a function, comprising
a memory including a plurality of registers for storing security codes, a comparator for comparing a received coded signal with the security code stored in each register and to generate said control signal upon detecting a code match, and field programming means operable to initiate field programming periods, including means for automatically erasing the security code stored in each receiver memory register upon receipt of a coded signal from a first transmitter during a field programming period, for storing a security code derived from said coded signal in the first register, and for storing a security code derived from a subsequent coded signal received from a different transmitter in the sequentially next register, such operation being subsequently repeatable by the receipt of coded signals from other different transmitters, only during said field programming period, so that each of the plurality of registers may contain a different security code.

15. A receiver for use in a remote control system which includes a plurality of transmitters that each transmits multi-part radio frequency signals of binary bits comprising a function part and a security code part, said receiver being operable to generate control signals for effecting performance of different vehicle functions, comprising
a power circuit, a memory including a plurality of sequential registers for storing security codes of binary bits, a comparator operable upon activation of the power circuit to compare the security code part of a received signal with the security code stored in each register and to generate the control signal indicated by the function part of the received signal upon detecting a match of the received signal code part with any stored security code, and field programming means operable to initiate field programming periods of predetermined length during which the security code stored in each receiver memory register is automatically erased and is replaced in the first register by the security code part of a signal received from a first transmitter during said period, and is replaced in the sequentially next register by the security code part of a subsequent signal received from a different transmitter during said period, such operation being subsequently repeatable upon receipt of signals from other different transmitters, only during said field programming period, so that each of the plurality of registers may contain a different security code.
