Abstract

A medical sensor for monitoring vital signs, in particular oxygen saturation, consists of a flexible carrier carrying the transmitter and receiver elements, and a housing element specifically adapted for application to a part of the human body, such as a finger. The flexible carrier may be used with a variety of different housing elements, such that it can be applied to virtually any limb or other part of the human body.

Claims

1. A medical sensor for monitoring vital signs of a human being by means of electromagnetic waves transmitted through or reflected by human tissue, said medical sensor comprising:

flexible carrier means carrying at least one transmitter element and one receiver element, said flexible carrier means including a flexible layer to which said transmitter element and said receiver element is attached, and a flexible carrier body for carrying said flexible layer, said body including a lower body portion, and an upper body portion, said lower body portion and said upper body portion being provided with body connection means for interconnection of said lower body portion and said upper body portion, and at least one of said lower body portion and said upper body portion is manufactured from transparent plastic material;

a separate housing element specifically adapted for application to a part of the human body; and

releasable connection means for releasably connecting together said flexible carrier means and said housing element, said housing element shaping said flexible carrier means into a configuration for effective monitoring of vital signs at said human body part.

2. The medical sensor according to claim 1, wherein said lower body portion is provided with recesses for receiving said transmitter element and said receiver element.

3. The medical sensor according to claim 1, wherein said flexible carrier means, as well as said housing element, include appropriate recesses defining said connection means.

4. The medical sensor according to claim 1, wherein said transparent plastic material is transparent silicone.

5. A flexible carrier device for monitoring vital signs of a human being by means of electromagnetic waves transmitted through or reflected by human tissue, said flexible carrier device comprising:

a flexible carrier body including a lower body portion and an upper body portion, at least one of said lower body portion and said upper body portion being manufactured from transparent material;

body connection means for interconnection of said lower body portion and said upper body portion;

a transmitter element and compatible receiver element;

a flexible layer to which at least said transmitter element and at least said receiver element are attached; and

releasable connection means for releasably connecting said flexible carrier device with a separate housing element and conforming said flexible carrier device to a desired shape supported by the housing element.

6. The flexible carrier device according to claim 5, wherein at least one of said lower body portion and said upper body portion includes at least one recess for injection of plastic material, said recess not extending along or crossing the optical axes of said transmitter and receiver elements.

7. The flexible carrier device according to claim 5, wherein said body connection means comprises cooperating studs and respective openings.

8. The flexible carrier device according to claim 5, wherein said transparent material is transparent silicone.

9. A kit of housing elements, each housing element of said kit of housing elements being adapted for housing a flexible carrier means carrying at least one transmitter element and at least one receiver element of a medical sensor for monitoring vital signs of a human being by means of electromagnetic waves transmitted through or reflected by human tissue, each said housing element including releasable connection means comprising a fastener element selected from the group consisting of studs, buttons, stud holes, and button holes, for releasably connecting said housing element with the flexible carrier means, each said housing element of said kit of housing elements specifically adapted to configure the flexible carrier means for application to a different part of the human body.

10. The housing element according to claim 9, including a self-contained elastic clip with facing inner surfaces, wherein said connection means is provided said inner surfaces of said clip.

11. The housing element according to claim 9, including an elastic clamp with longitudinal projections, wherein said connection means is provided at the inner surfaces of said longitudinal projections of said elastic clamp.

12. The housing element according to claim 11, comprising an additional projection for application to the human ear.

13. A method for manufacturing flexible carrier means for monitoring vital signs of a human being by means of electromagnetic waves transmitted through or reflected by human tissue, said method comprising the steps of:

providing a lower body portion and an upper body portion of a flexible carrier body manufactured from transparent material, said lower body portion and said upper body portion being provided with respective body connection means;

providing a flexible layer to which a transmitter element and a receiver element are attached;

introducing said flexible layer between the lower body portion and the upper body portion of said flexible carrier body; and

injecting plastic material in predefined recesses of at least one of said lower body portion and said upper body portion.

14. The method according to claim 13, wherein the flexible carrier body is manufactured from transparent silicone.

15. The method according to claim 13, wherein said injecting step includes injecting colored silicone.

16. The method according to claim 13, wherein said injecting step includes injecting opaque silicone.
