Paging system with registration mode which interrupts the pager's standard operating protocol and is energized with a higher duty cycle
First Claim
1. A method of initially registering a radio pager which has an identification number in a pager system which does not have stored therein said identification number, said pager having a display and being intermittently operative, said pager having operative and inoperative periods, said pager having a normal mode of operation wherein said operative periods are short and said inoperative periods are long, said system including a radio transmitter and means to transmit data to said transmitter from a message input facility, the method comprising the steps:
- placing said pager in a registration mode by means of a manual stimulus to said pager;
decreasing the length of the inoperative periods of said pager in response to said manual stimulus, whereby the inoperative periods of said pager are relatively short when said pager is in said registration mode;
providing a registration code to said message input facility, said code identifying said particular pager;
relaying from the message input facility to said transmitter, and broadcasting from the transmitter to said pager, a registration message addressed to the pager;
receiving the registration message by the pager;
displaying on the pager an indication that the registration message was received; and
returning said pager to said normal mode in response to the receipt of said registration message.

Abstract
The user of a new pager places it into "registration mode" by commands entered through the pager'"'"'s user interface. In registration mode, the pager displays a previously stored identification code and begins rapidly searching through a list of candidate paging channels. The user then telephones the paging system clearinghouse and provides the identification code. Upon receiving this information, the paging system broadcasts an initialization message addressed to the new pager. Included in the message may be initialization data, such as a list of alternative frequencies on which the paging data may be found. The pager quickly receives this message (due to its rapid searching operation) and stores any initialization data in data registers for future reference. The pager then displays a message to the user confirming the pager'"'"'s proper operation.

8. A method of initially registering a pager with a paging system which operates according to a time slot protocol having a plurality of short time slots, said pager having a unique identifier indicia and receiving messages during a particular one of said time slots, said pager having an associated display means, said pager having the associated identifier indicia stored therein, said pager having a normal mode and being operative for a first period to receive a message during a particular time slot when in said normal mode, said first period being short and being followed by a relatively long second period during which said pager is in a low power mode, said method including the steps:
-
placing a said pager in a registration mode, making said second period shorter when said pager is in registration mode than when said pager is in normal mode, displaying said identifier indicia on the associated display means when said pager is in registration mode; telephoning the paging system and providing thereto the identifier indicia associated with a pager which is in registration mode; registering said pager in said paging system; broadcasting from the pager system to said pager which is in registration mode a message confirming that the pager has been registered; and storing said message confirming in a register internal to said pager.

9. The method of operating a pager system which includes a pager which has a display, said pager being energized intermittently according to a standard operating protocol to receive paging data broadcast from a paging system, said pager having a identification number,
an improved method for registering a particular pager in the system when said system does not have stored therein said identification number, wherein, in response to a user-induced stimulus, the pager interrupts its standard operating protocol and is energized with a higher duty cycle than the standard operating protocol dictates, in order to more rapidly receive registration data broadcast from the paging system, displaying a registration message on said display, broadcasting from the paging system to the pager a message confirming that the pager has been registered, and storing said data in a register internal to said pager.
