First Claim
1. A method of initializing a remote unit which communicates via a spread spectrum RF link with a base station by transmitting data packets which are encoded by a network chipping code, the method comprising the steps of:
- a) transmitting an initialization request data packet encoded by an universal chipping code from said remote unit to said base station via the spread spectrum RF link, said universal chipping code being different than said network chipping code;
b) receiving at said remote unit an initialization data packet transmitted by said base station.

Abstract
A packet data transmission system is disclosed in which remote units, such as remote hand-held data gathering units, which normally communicate with remote base stations via a spread spectrum RF communications, are initialized via spread spectrum RF communications. A network chipping sequence is provided for encoding normal communications and a universal chipping sequence is provided for encoding communications relating to initialization of the remote units. The network chipping sequence is adjustable and must be initialized in each of the remote units to enable normal communications. The universal chipping code is fixed for all remote devices and base stations. Since the universal chipping code is fixed, spread spectrum RF communications of the initialization data, using the universal chipping code, can be effected even if the network chipping sequence is not initially set in the remote units. The initialization data communicated to the remote includes the network chipping code which is then stored in the remote units and used for subsequent normal communications.

32. A data communication system for initializing a plurality of remote units which communicate via a spread spectrum RF link with base stations by exchanging data encoded by a network chipping code, comprising:

a) a plurality of remote units, each remote unit comprising; i) means for storing the network chipping code; ii) means for forming an initialization request; iii) means for encoding said initialization request using a universal chipping code; iv) means for transmitting said encoded initialization request to the base station; v) means for receiving from the base station a spread spectrum RF encoded initialization data packet which is encoded by the universal chipping code; vi) decoding means for decoding said received encoded initialization data packet using said universal chipping code; vii) means for updating said network chipping code stored in said means for storing the network chipping code responsive to decoded initialization data packet; b) at least one base station, each base station comprising; i) means for receiving from the remote unit the encoded spread spectrum RF initialization request which is encoded with a universal chipping code; ii) decoding means for decoding said initialization request using said universal chipping code; iii) means for forming an initialization data packet responsive to said initialization request; iv) encoding means for encoding said initialization data packet using said universal chipping code; v) means for transmitting said encoded initialization data packet. - View Dependent Claims (33, 34, 35, 36, 37, 38)

39. A data communication system in which a plurality of remote units communicate using spread spectrum RF with a base station, comprising:

a) a plurality of remote units, each having transmit means arranged to transmit to the base station an encoded spread spectrum RF data packet encoded by a network chipping code and an encoded spread spectrum RF initialization request packet encoded by a universal chipping code; b) at least one base station having; i) means for receiving the encoded spread spectrum RF data packet and the encoded spread spectrum RF initialization request packet transmitted by the remote units, said means for receiving forming a received signal; ii) detecting means for detecting whether the received signal is encoded by said network chipping code or said universal chipping code; iii) decoding means for decoding said received signal using said network chipping code or said universal chipping code depending upon the result of the detecting means; iv) means for encoding a response data packet using said network chipping code or said universal chipping code depending upon the result of the detecting means; and v) means for transmitting said encoded response data packet. - View Dependent Claims (40, 41, 42)
