Adaptive cellular paging system
First Claim
1. An adaptive paging system for delivering predesignated messages to select ones of a plurality of paging receivers, comprising:
- first and second paging systems for receiving the predesignated messages designated for the select ones of the paging receivers, each of said first and second paging systems having a paging transmitter for transmitting said received predesignated messages over an RF link to the ones of the paging receivers being within an associated predetermined transmission locale about said paging transmitter, which said transmission locale defines the area within which the paging receivers can receive messages;
a location system for determining in which of said first and second paging systems associated predetermined transmission locale that the select ones of the paging receivers can receive the predesignated messages for substantially all positions of said select ones of said paging receivers within the predetermined locale of the predetermined one of said first and second paging systems;
a transmission device for generating the predesignated messages for transmission to the select ones of the paging receivers;
a transmission link for connecting said transmission device to said first and second paging systems; and
routing control circuitry for controlling said transmission device to transmit each of said generated predesignated messages only to the one of said first and second paging systems at which associated predetermined transmission local said location system has determined that the destination ones of the paging receivers can receive predesignated messages.

Abstract
An adaptive paging system includes a paging terminal that is operable to receive paging signals and transmit them up to a satellite (28) and down through a downlink (312) to stick locations (314), (316), (318), (320) and (322). Each of the sticks (314)-(322) is associated with a given locale (324), (326), (328), (330) and (332). The sticks are operable in a simulcast mode and also in a cellular mode. In the cellular mode, each of the sticks (314)-(322) is operable to receive a separate message that is distinct from the other cells. Pagers (36), having a known location at any of the locales (324)-(332) can then be selectively addressed and data transferred thereto. To prevent interference between adjacent RF locales, adjacent cells are not turned on during transmission to select cells in the cellular mode. These can be turned on at a different time. Orthogonal coding can be utilized such that adjacent cells can be turned on, thus increasing throughput.

9. A method for adaptively delivering predesignated messages to select ones of a plurality of paging receivers, comprising the steps of:
-
disposing first and second paging systems within predetermined transmission locales associated therewith, each of the predetermined transmission locales defining the area within which the paging receivers can receive messages; receiving the predesignated messages that are designated for the select ones of the paging receivers at the first and second paging systems and retransmitting the received predesignated messages within the associated transmission locales; determining in which of the predetermined transmission locales associated with the first and second paging systems the select ones of the paging receivers can receive the predesignated paging messages for substantially all positions of the select ones of the paging receivers therein; generating the predesignated messages for transmission to the select ones of the paging receivers; providing a transmission link from a transmission device to the first and second paging systems; and controlling the transmission device to transmit each of the generated predesignated messages only to the one of the first and second paging systems at which associated predetermined transmission locale the step of determining has determined that the destination ones of the paging receivers can receive predesignated messages. - View Dependent Claims (10, 11, 12, 13)
