Arrangement interrogation unit for transponder
First Claim
1. An interrogation unit for communication with at least one responder unit in spaced relation with respect to said interrogation unit, said interrogation unit comprising:
- a) a microprocessor,b) an RF oscillator;
c) an antenna circuit, operably controlled by said microprocessor to transmit RF interrogation signals of a first frequency to said at least one responder unit and to receive RF responses of a second frequency from said at least one responder unit;
d) a transmitter which receives the output of said RF oscillator and transmits at least one RF interrogation signal of said first frequency for interrogating said responder unit via said antenna circuit thereby causing said responder unit to return read data stored therein in the form of a RF response of said second frequency;
e) a switch connected to said microprocessor, said switch operable under control of said microprocessor for disabling the output of said transmitter and enabling reception of said RF response upon termination of said RF interrogation signal;
f) a receiver for receiving said RF response of said second frequency via said antenna upon termination of said RF interrogation pulse; and
g) a demodulator for demodulation of said read data from said RF response.

Abstract
An interrogation unit which has a control circuit and an RF oscillator is described. The interrogation unit further has a transmitter which receives the output of the RF oscillator and transmits at least one RF interrogation pulse of a first frequency for interrogating the responder unit, causing the responder unit to return read data in the form of a RF response. Also in the interrogation unit is a switch for disabling the output of said transmitter and enabling reception of the RF response upon termination of the RF interrogation signal. The interrogation unit still further has a receiver for receiving the RF response upon termination of the RF interrogation pulse and an interrogation unit demodulator for demodulation of the read data from said RF response.

10. A transponder arrangement comprising:
-
a) a responder unit; b) an interrogation unit, said interrogation unit having primary communication coil and a secondary power coil; and c) a base unit on which said interrogation unit may rest, said base unit having a primary power coil arranged spatially in such a manner that said primary and secondary power coils cooperate like the primary winding and secondary winding of a transformer so that when said interrogation unit is placed on said base unit a battery within said interrogation unit and connected through power conditioning circuitry to said secondary winding may be charged in a contactless fashion, said base unit further comprising a primary communication coil which is spatially very close to said interrogator'"'"'s primary communication coil such that a contactless signal transmission may be effected between said interrogation unit and said base unit.
