Abstract

A power and control system for micro-electronics is described, as for lightweight, battery-powered electrochromic (EC) eyewear. Preferably such system includes a primary, lithium-type cell and a secondary, sealed lead acid-type cell in a hybrid, power-sharing configuration capable of supplying the low-energy, high-current (pulse) drain requirements of microelectronics, e.g. a switchable EC lens. A switch-mode power supply controller manages the power-sharing load on the hybrid battery system such that the secondary cell is charged by the primary cell. The system is capable of meeting short-term pulse drain requirements of switching EC lenses from clear to fully darkened at an acceptably fast rate and long-term operating life requirements of approximately 1500 cycles. The invented lead acid-type battery preferably is elongate, of uniform, right-rectangular cross section and provides over 20 mA-hours'"'"' capacity and the invented lithium-type battery preferably also is elongate, of uniform, right-rectangular cross section and provides over 180 mA-hours'"'"' capacity, all in a tiny volume compatible with one or more volume-restricted spaces. Preferably, the lithium-type and lead acid-type batteries are of approximately equal form factor and volume, for symmetric placement thereof in a void within either temple. The temples are hingedly connected with the eyewear'"'"'s front piece via a unique leaf spring that biases the former into one of two orientations relative to the latter. Dual like-cell battery configurations also are disclosed, along with a flexible circuit defining one or more frame-mounted transmissivity switches. A microcontroller is described that fits within a tiny void formed in the eyewear'"'"'s bridge. Finally an external, battery-powered battery charger case and circuit are described for use with EC eyewear powered by dual lead acid batteries.

Claims

1. Electrochromic eyewear comprising:

an eyewear frame;

an electrochromic lens mounted in said frame, said lens being capable of switching its visible light transmissivity in response to switching control logic;

one or more switches mounted in said frame, the actuation of at least one of said switches affecting switching of said lens via said switching control logic; and

a power supply contained within said frame, said power supply including a controller, a first battery for supplying standby current to said controller, a second battery for supplying switching current through said connected switch to said lens, with said controller including a switch-mode power converter capable of charging said second battery.

2. The eyewear of claim 1, wherein said first battery includes a lithium-type cell and wherein said second battery includes a lead acid-type cell.

3. The eyewear of claim 1, wherein said first battery has a capacity of at least approximately 180 milliampere-hours of energy and wherein said second battery has a capacity of at least approximately 20 milliampere-hours of energy.

4. The eyewear of claim 2, wherein each of said first and said second batteries occupies a volume of less than approximately 1.0 milliliter and wherein said controller occupies a volume of less than approximately 0.15 milliliter.

5. The eyewear of claim 2, wherein each of said first and said second batteries occupies a volume of less than approximately 1.0 milliliter and wherein said controller occupies a volume of less than approximately 0.1 milliliter.

6. The eyewear of claim 2, wherein the form factors of said first and said second batteries are approximately equal and wherein said first and said second batteries are substantially symmetrically located within either temple of said frame.

7. The eyewear of claim 2, wherein said power supply responsive to said switch is capable of switching said lens between approximately 20% and 65% visible light transmissivity within less than approximately 10 seconds.

8. The eyewear of claim 2, wherein said power supply responsive to said switch is capable of switching said lens between approximately 20% and 65% visible light transmissivity within less than approximately 8 seconds.

9. The eyewear of claim 2, wherein said power supply responsive to said switch is capable of switching said lens between approximately 20% and 65% visible light transmissivity within less than approximately 5 seconds.

10. The eyewear of claim 1, wherein said switch is formed between said eyewear frame and said electrochromic lens, with said switch including a first flexible conductive expanse adjacent said frame and a second flexible conductive expanse adjacent said lens, said first and said second expanses being pre-formed normally to produce a first condition of said switch corresponding to a first defined transmissivity of said lens and to produce under manual pressure on said frame a momentary second condition of said switch corresponding to a second defined transmissivity of said lens.

The eyewear of claim 1 in which at least two of said switches are mounted in said frame, said two switches both being operatively connected to said lens via said control logic, wherein each of said switches is formed between said eyewear frame and said electrochromic lens, with each of said switches including a first flexible conductive expanse adjacent said frame and a second flexible conductive expanse adjacent said lens, each of said first and said second expanses being pre-formed normally to produce a first condition of said both switches corresponding to a first defined transmissivity of said lens and to produce under manual pressure on said frame a momentary second condition of said both switches corresponding to a second defined transmissivity of said lens, said two switches being operable by manual gripping pressure on said frame in at least two spaced locations corresponding to said two switches located around said frame.

12. The eyewear of claim 1, wherein said connected switch is responsive to such manual pressure as low as approximately five ounces.

The eyewear of claim 1 which further comprises a flexible circuit including plural elongate conductor expanses extending along said frame and around said lens, said flexible circuit having pre-formed therein at least two overlapping termini forming dual contacts of said connected switch, said termini in a first lapped relationship between said frame and said lens defining a first open condition of said switch and said termini in a second lapped relationship therebetween with external manual pressure applied defining a second closed condition of said switch enabling such switching of the transmissivity of said lens.

14. The eyewear of claim 13, wherein said connected switch is responsive to such manual pressure as low as approximately five ounces.

15. A pair of electrochromic eyeglasses comprising:

a front piece including two electrochromic-lens-receiving supports and a hollow bridge connecting the supports, said supports each including a recess extending around an internal surface of the supports'"'"' periphery, each recess being configured for holding an electrochromic lens;

temple members connected to either side of said front piece by a corresponding hinge, each temple member including an elongate chamber for enclosing a battery; and

a flex circuit assembly fitted substantially within said front piece, said circuit assembly including a proximal active-component circuit region for driving the electrochromic lenses, the circuit assembly including plural-conductor regions extending from said active-component circuit region in generally opposite directions for routing through said support recesses, through said hinges and at least partway into said chambers for electrical connection of batteries contained therein with the active-component circuit region of said flex circuit assembly.

16. The eyeglasses of claim 15 wherein said flex circuit assembly proximal region is positioned within said bridge.

17. The eyeglasses of claim 15 wherein said flex circuit assembly includes in said plural-conductor regions thereof lens-contacting land regions for operative electrical connection with one such electrochromic lens.

18. The eyeglasses of claim 17 wherein said recesses have substantially enclosed lengthwise peripheral regions for capturing said flex circuit assembly within said supports.

19. The eyeglasses of claim 18 wherein said front piece includes electrochromic lenses positioned within said supports and wherein said recesses have substantially open regions interposed said enclosed peripheral regions for providing such electrical contact between said lenses and said land regions of said flex circuit assembly.
