An EL device having a hole injection electrode, an electron injection electrode, and at least an organic emitting layer therebetween, said organic emitting layer comprising an 8-quinolinol derivative-metal complex whose ligand is selected from the group consisting of chemical formulas 102 through 106chemical formula 102 ##STR102## chemical formula 103 ##STR103## chemical formula 104 ##STR104## chemical formula 105 ##STR105## chemical formula 106 ##STR106## wherein the metal of said 8-quinolinol derivative-metal complex is selected from the group consisting of beryllium, magnesium, calcium, strontium, barium zinc, cadmium., aluminum, gallium and indium.
