Quality of service management for source routing multimedia packet networks
First Claim
1. A local area network comprisinga plurality of user stations on said network, transmission means for interconnecting said user stations to each other over a plurality of transmission components, means for selecting a data path between two of said stations, andquality of service management means connected by said transmission means to said plurality of user stations for ensuring that each path selected by said means for selecting a data path meets pre-defined quality of service parameters, said quality of service management means comprising:
- means for storing a plurality of parameters for each of said transmission components, means responsive to a request for a multimedia path between two of said user stations for comparing each requested path component parameter to the corresponding stored parameter for the requested path components; and
means for allocating said path when the stored parameters, for each component of a requested path, equal or exceed the requested parameters, and for denying the allocation of said path when the stored parameters for at least one component of a requested path is less than the corresponding requested parameter.

Abstract
A management system for local area networks ensures selected levels of quality of service to all transmission requests submitted to the management system. This management system is attached to the network and receives requests from all other stations on the network to reserve facilities for a particular quality of service data stream. An allocator in the management system determines if the requested facilities are available and, if so, reserves these facilities for the requesting station. If the facilities are not available, the request is denied. A hierarchical data base containing all of the current parameters of all of the network resources and all of the currently supported data streams is used to support the allocation process.

9. A method for managing multimedia transmissions in local area network comprising the steps of
attaching a plurality of user stations to said network, interconnecting said user stations to each other over a plurality of transmission components, selecting a data path between two of said stations, and ensuring that each path selected by said step of selecting a data path meets pre-defined quality of service parameters, said step of ensuring further comprising the steps of storing a plurality of parameters for each of said transmission components, comparing, in response to a request for a multimedia path between two of said user stations, each requested path component parameter to the corresponding stored parameter for the requested path components; - and
allocating said path when the stored parameters, for each component of a requested path, equal or exceed the requested parameters, and denying the allocation of said path when the stored parameters for at least one component of a requested path is less than the corresponding requested parameter. - View Dependent Claims (10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16)
