Abstract

A traffic broadcast receiver with a first memory (16) for allocating received addresses to segments (S1-S40) of a street system, and with a device (30) for reproducing the received coded signals in clearly understandable form, is equipped with an additional device (42) with a second memory (44) for travel parameters of the segments (S1-S40) stored in the first memory (16), and addresses for segments adjacent to the respective segment (S1-S40), with an input device (34) for at least one destination input which is to be allocated to a stored segment (S1-S40), with a computer (46) to determine the optimum route to the destination (ZP), and with a third memory (48) in which the segments belonging to the optimum route determined by the computer (46) can be stored. In conjunction with the segments (S1-S40) stored in the first memory (16), the additional device allows the reproduction of an optimum route, determined by the computer ( 46), to the destination that was entered.

Claims

1. A traffic broadcast receiver comprising:

a) a first memory for allocating received addresses to segments of a street system;

b) a device for reproducing received coded signals in clearly understandable form; and

c) an additional device, said additional device including

i) a second memory for storing travel parameters of the segments stored in the first memory and addresses allocated to the segments,

ii) an input device for permitting the supply of at least one destination input which is to be allocated to a stored segment,

iii) a computer adapted to determine the optimum route to the destination, and

iv) a third memory in which segments forming the optimum route determined by the computer can be stored.

2. The receiver of claim 1 wherein segments over which travel has been completed are deleted from the third memory.

3. The receiver of claim 1 wherein the third memory is adapted to store segments for a second-best route in addition to the segments for the optimum route.

4. The receiver of claim 1 wherein each of the segments has a length, the second memory is adapted to store the lengths of the respective segments as the travel parameter, and the optimum route determined by the computer includes segments having the shortest sum of segment lengths.

5. The receiver of claim 1 wherein each segment stored in the second memory has an associated evaluation factor, and the optimum route determined by the computer includes segments having the minimum summed products of the respective segment length times an evaluation factor.

6. The receiver of claim 5 wherein the second memory is adapted to store the lengths of the segments multiplied by their associated evaluation factor.

9. The receiver of claim 1 further comprising a gate circuit adapted to pass through to the reproduction device only those traffic messages which apply to segments stored in the third memory.

10. The receiver of claim 1 wherein tile traffic broadcast receiver recognizes identification signals of broadcast transmitters and further comprises an analysis device adapted to determine an approximate location of a vehicle from particular broadcast transmitters being received.

11. The receiver of claim 10 further comprising a device adapted to allocate the location determined by the analysis device to a segment stored in the first memory.

12. The receiver of claim 1 further comprising an allocation device adapted to allocate the input of the destination to a stored segment.

13. The receiver of claim 12 wherein tile allocation device comprises a stored table in which a respective associated segment is stored for a potential starting point and destination inputs.

14. The receiver of claim 1 further comprising a receiver for a separate traffic message channel.

15. The receiver of claim 9 wherein the receiver stores the received traffic messages which apply to the segments stored in the third memory and the gate circuit passes the received traffic messages through to the reproduction device shortly before the applicable segment is entered.

16. The receiver of claim 1 wherein the computing device is adapted to process traffic messages received in standardized form to check the optimum route that has been determined.

17. The receiver of claim 16 wherein tile evaluation factor for the applicable route segment can be modified by the traffic message received in standardized form.

18. The receiver of claim 1 wherein the additional device is implemented in the form of an IC card that can be inserted into and removed from the traffic broadcast receiver.

19. The receiver of claim 18 wherein the IC card also comprises the first memory.

20. The receiver of claim 1 wherein the reproduction device is adapted to output the segments belonging to the optimum route determined.

7. The receiver of claim 7 further comprising a fourth memory adapted to store the evaluation factors such that the evaluation factors can be read from, and written to, the fourth memory.

8. The receiver of claim 7 wherein said fourth memory stores at least two evaluation factors for at least one of the segments, the evaluation factors being a function of at least one of travel time, date, and weather.

21. The receiver of claim 21 wherein the reproduction device is an audible reproduction device formed as a speech synthesizer.

22. In a traffic broadcast receiver including

a station receiver,

a decoder,

a first memory including a plurality of addresses and associated segments, the segments defining a road system,

a memory device,

a computer,

an event memory,

a second memory storing all links between segments stored in the first memory and storing length corresponding to each of the segments stored in the first memory,

a third memory,

a fourth memory storing travel parameter evaluation factors corresponding to each of the segments stored in the first memory,

an input device, and

an output device,

a method for providing a route to a driver, comprising the steps of:

a) determining a starting point;

b) determining a first segment upon which the starting point lies based on the segments stored in the first memory;

c) entering a destination point via the input device;

d) determining a second segment upon which the destination point lies based on the segments stored in the first memory;

e) computing an optimum route between the first segment associated with the starting point and the second segment associated with the destination point;

f) writing the optimum route computed in step (e) to the third memory; and

g) outputting the optimum route to a driver via the output device.

23. The method of claim 22 further comprising tile step of:

h) deleting any segments defining the optimum route calculated that have already been traveled.

24. The method of claim 22 wherein the step of determining a starting point comprises the sub-step of inputting a starting point via the input device.

25. The method of claim 22 wherein the step of determining a starting point comprises the sub-step of determining an approximate location based on stations received by the station receiver.

26. The method of claim 22 wherein tile step of computing an optimum route uses the Ford-Moore algorithm.

27. The method of claim 22 wherein tile optimum route computed in step (e) is defined by the minimum sum of lengths of segments defining the route.

28. The method of claim 22 wherein the optimum route computed in step (e) is defined by the minimum sum of the product of the lengths and evaluation factors of the segments defining the route.
