Apparatus and method for vasodilation
First Claim
1. A method of dilating a blood vessel in vasospasm filled with a first fluid comprising the steps ofinserting a catheter having a distal end into a blood vessel in vasospasm, said catheter comprising a lumen containing a second fluid, wherein said first and second fluids can be the same or different, generating a hydraulic wave front in the second fluid in said catheter, propagating said wave front through the second fluid in said catheter, transmitting said wave front from the distal end of said catheter, andpropagating said transmitted wave front through the first fluid in the blood vessel to induce vasodilation.

Abstract
A method and apparatus for dilating blood vessels in vasospasm through the use of high frequency wave, e.g., hydraulic or acoustic waves. The invention is suitable to treat any vasospasm, including any vasospasm intractable to medication, including cerebral vasospasm, which currently is not susceptible to any mechanical or chemical treatments. The apparatus for dilating blood vessels includes a catheter having a fluid-filled lumen, a wave generator arranged within the catheter lumen for generating a wave front that propagates through the fluid in the lumen and is transmitted from the distal end of the catheter to propagate through the fluid in the blood vessel, and an energy source connected to the wave generator to provide energy to produce the wave front.

5. A method of dilating a fluid-filled blood vessel in vasospasm comprising inserting into the vessel a wave generator arranged in a catheter to produce a hydraulic wave front in the fluid that induces vasodilation in the blood vessel, and propagating said hydraulic wave front through said fluid in the blood vessel, wherein said wave generator is controlled within said catheter such that said hydraulic wave front travels at a frequency of one wave per about one microsecond in said fluid, whereby said hydraulic wave front is not accompanied by a shock wave or cavitation bubble within the blood vessel.
