Mobile radio data communication system and method
First Claim
1. A radio frequency data communication system, comprisinga base station transceiver selectively operable for data communication at either a first data rate or a second data rate;
- a plurality of mobile transceiver units selectively operable for data communication with said base station transceiver at either said first data rate or said second data rate, each of said mobile transceiver units having an assigned polling address;
control means for controlling said base station transceiver to send polling messages at said first data rate to said mobile transceiver units and to send a test transmission at said second data rate, said test transmission being interlaced with said polling messages; and
data rate switchover means responsive to an evaluation of said test transmission for automatically selecting either said first data rate or said second data rate of communication between said base station transceiver and one of said plurality of mobile transceiver units.

Abstract
In an exemplary embodiment, a base station maintains RF communication with mobile units using a polling protocol which may communicate at a higher or lower data rate, depending on the channel conditions. The base station transmits a general polling message at the lower data rate, and, associated therewith, transmits a test pattern for evaluation by the mobile units. Upon receipt of the transmissions, the mobile units analyze the test pattern to determine whether communication at the higher data rate is possible. Based on the determination, the mobile units select the appropriate rate to transmit data messages. The test pattern can be associated with a query from a mobile unit having a message to send, or with a contention polling message from the base.

6. A method of operating an RF communication system wherein a plurality of transceivers, at least one of which is stationary and at least one of which is mobile, can reliably communicate at a lower data rate over an area of mobile operation, and can reliably communicate at a higher data rate over only a portion of the area of mobile operation, said method comprising:
-
transmitting by a first of said plurality of transceivers an RF test signal; at a second of said plurality of transceivers which receives the test signal, evaluating the RF test signal to determine whether communication between said first and second of said plurality of transceivers at a higher data rate would likely be reliable; for the case where the evaluation of the received RF test signal determines that communication at the higher data rate would likely be reliable, transmitting by said second of said plurality of transceivers a responsive RP transmission signalling for communication at the higher data rate; and for the case where the evaluation of the received RF test signal determines that communication at the higher data rate would not likely be reliable, transmitting by said second of said plurality of transceivers a responsive RF transmission signalling for communication at the lower data rate. - View Dependent Claims (7, 8, 9, 10)

11. A method of operating an RF communication system wherein a plurality of transceivers, at least one of which is stationary and at least one of which is mobile, can reliably communicate at a high data rate when network conditions permit, said method comprising:
-
communicating by a first and a second of said plurality of transceivers at a high data rate; transmitting by said first of said plurality of transceivers an RF test signal; at said second of said plurality of transceivers which receives the test signal, evaluating the received RF test signal to determine whether to continue communication at the high data rate; and for the case where the evaluation of the received RF test signal determines that continued communication at the high data rate would likely be unreliable, transmitting by said second of said plurality of transceivers a responsive RF transmission signalling an end of high data rate communication. - View Dependent Claims (12, 13, 14, 15)
