1. An electronic mail delivery system comprising:

  • an electronic mail network for delivering a first message from an originating device to a destination device, the first message including message data and a network address for identifying the originating and destination devices, the network address comprising a first number of characters;

    a paging terminal coupled to the electronic mail network for receiving thefirst message and automatically generating from the network address therein an alias of the originating device having a second number of characters less than the first number of characters without user intervention further than that required for initiation of the first message, wherein the paging terminal further encodes the message data and the alias, rather than the network address, into a second message for transmission to at least one selective call receiver;

    paging transmitting means for transmitting the second message over a paging communication channel; and

    at least one portable selective call receiver for receiving the second message over the paging communication channel and for presenting at least the message data of the second message to a user of the at least one portable selective call receiver.
