Abstract

An improved dual-stage pump system is provided for the accurate pumping and filtering of viscous fluids. Two hydraulically activated pumps are provided in series with a filter and reservoir disposed in-line between the two pumps. The reservoir acts as a source bottle for the second pump and allows the first pump to pump the viscous fluid through the filter at a rate independent of the dispensing rate of the second pump. By operating the first pump at a rate independent of the second pump, back pressure at the filter is avoided. Each hydraulically activated diaphragm pump is equipped with an improved diaphragm that is pre-formed to the geometries of the process fluid cavity thereby eliminating any inaccuracies in the operation of the pumps due to expansion of retraction of the diaphragm during pump operation.

Claims

1. A dual stage pump system for pumping and filtering high viscosity fluids, the system comprising:

a first pump for pumping fluid from an input source through a filtering media and into a reservoir,

the filtering media disposed between the first pump and the reservoir, the first pump being capable of pumping liquid through the filtering media to the reservoir,

the reservoir disposed between filtering media and a second pump, the second pump being capable of withdrawing liquid from the reservoir, the reservoir providing filtered fluid to the second pumping means,

the second pump pumping fluid received from the reservoir means through a discharge outlet of said second pump,

wherein the discharge outlet of the second pump is connected to a three-way valve, said valve having at least two alternative positions including one position in which the discharge outlet is in communication with a dispensing outlet, and a second position in which the discharge outlet is in communication with a recirculation conduit,

the recirculation conduit being in communication with a input source of fluid to the first pumping means.

2. A dual stage pump system for pumping and filtering high viscosity fluids, the system comprising:

a first pump for pumping fluid from an input source through a filtering media and into a reservoir,

the filtering media disposed between the first pump and the reservoir, the first pump being capable of pumping liquid through the filtering media to the reservoir,

the reservoir disposed between filtering media and a second pump, the second pump being capable of withdrawing liquid from the reservoir, the reservoir providing filtered fluid to the second pumping means,

the second pump pumping fluid received from the reservoir means through a discharge outlet of said second pump,

a controller for monitoring and controlling the operation of said system, said controller being settable to operate said first and second pumps at predetermined pumping rates and to a predetermined quantity of fluid to be dispensed by said second pump, said controller having the ability to receive data indicating the pressure of fluid in said reservoir, said controller activating said first pump based upon said pressure.

3. A dual stage pump system for pumping and filtering high viscosity fluids, the system comprising:

a first pumping means for pumping fluid from an input source through a filtering means and into a reservoir means,

the filtering means disposed between the first pumping means and the reservoir means, the first pumping means being capable of pumping liquid through the filtering means to the reservoir means,

the reservoir means disposed between filtering means and a second pumping means, the second pumping means being capable of withdrawing liquid from the reservoir means, the reservoir means providing filtered fluid to the second pumping means,

the second pumping means pumping fluid received from the reservoir means through a discharge outlet,

wherein the discharge outlet of the second pumping means is connected to a three-way valve, said valve having at least two alternative positions including one position in which the discharge outlet is in communication with a dispensing outlet, and a second position in which the discharge outlet is in communication with a recirculation conduit,

the recirculation conduit being in communication with the input source to the first pumping means.

4. The system of claim 3,

wherein the first pumping means operates at a first pumping rate,

the second pumping means operates at a second pumping rate,

the first pumping rate being independent of the second pumping rate.

5. The system of claim 3,

wherein the first pumping means operates at a first pumping rate, the filtering means including a filter of a first filter size, the fluid having a first fluid viscosity,

the first pumping rate being adjustable so that the first pumping means may be operated to control back pressure at the filtering means.

6. The system of claim 3,

wherein the second pumping means is a hydraulically activated diaphragm pump, the second pumping means including a diaphragm disposed between a process fluid cavity and a hydraulic fluid cavity,

the diaphragm having resilience resulting from said diaphragm having been prestressed to a pre-stress pressure from about 40 PSI to about 80 PSI for a time period from about 20 minutes to about 40 minutes.

7. The system of claim 3,

further including controller means, the controller means including means for inputting a required second pumping rate of the second pumping means.

8. The system of claim 7,

wherein the reservoir means includes a reservoir means volume, the first pumping means including means for sensing pressure between the filtering means and the first pumping means, the controller means capable of decreasing the first pumping rate of the first pumping means if the pressure sensed at the first pumping means is above a predetermined value.

9. The system of claim 8,

wherein the controller means capable of increasing the first pumping rate of the first pumping means if the pressure sensed at the first pumping means is below a predetermined value.

10. The system of claim 7,

wherein the reservoir means includes a reservoir volume, the second pumping means including means for sensing pressure between the reservoir means and the second pumping means, and

the controller means capable of automatically increasing the second pumping rate of the second pumping means if the pressure sensed at the second pumping means is above a predetermined value.

11. The system of claim 10,

wherein the controller means capable of decreasing the second pumping rate of the second pumping means if the pressure sensed at the second pumping means is below a predetermined value.
