Abstract

A corrosion-resistant metal strip and method for making the same which is essentially lead free and is not highly reflective. The coating on the metal strip is a metallic coating comprised of tin and a very low weight percentage of lead. The coating alloy may also include antimony, bismuth, copper, zinc to improve the coating process and/or improve the properties of the tin coating. A metal layer may also applied to the surface of the metal strip prior to applying the metallic alloy coating.

Claims

1. A thin metal strip of a metal selected from the group consisting of carbon steel, stainless steel, copper, nickel alloys, tin, titanium, coated in a continuous, hot-dip process having an ultra-thin intermediate metal layer of a metal selected from the group consisting of nickel, chromium, zinc, copper or tin applied to the surface of said strip and a coating of corrosive-resistant metallic coating coated onto said intermediate metal barrier layer, said coating comprising at least about 15 weight percent tin, at least about 10 weight percent zinc, less than 1.0 weight percent lead and an effective amount of metallic stabilizer selected from the group consisting of antimony, bismuth, copper and mixtures thereof.

2. A coated metal strip as defined in claim 1, wherein said coating is a two phase alloy of tin and zinc with the zinc in a tin rich matrix comprising:

3. A coated metal strip as defined in claim 2, wherein said coating includes at least one metal additive selected from the group consisting of nickel, magnesium, titanium, aluminum, manganese, silicon, cadmium, lead, copper, iron, antimony, bismuth and mixtures thereof.

4. A coated metal strip as defined in claim 3, wherein the lead content of said coating is not more than 0.01 weight percent.

5. A coated metal strip as defined in claim 4, wherein said ultra-thin intermediate metal layer on said strip is heated prior to said strip being hot dip coated.

6. A coated metal strip as defined in claim 5, wherein said ultrathin intermediate layer is tin.

7. A coated metal strip as defined in claim 2, wherein the thickness of said coating is at least 0.0001 inch.

8. A coated metal strip as defined in claim 2, wherein said ultra-thin metal intermediate layer is plated onto said metal strip and has a thickness of up to 3 microns.

9. A coated metal strip as defined in claim 2, wherein said ultra-thin intermediate layer is copper.

10. A coated metal strip as defined in claim 2, wherein said ultra-thin intermediate layer is chromium.

11. A coated metal strip as defined in claim 1, wherein said coating includes at least one metal additive selected from the group consisting of nickel, magnesium, titanium, aluminum, manganese, silicon, cadmium, lead, copper, iron, zinc, antimony, bismuth and mixtures thereof.

12. A coated metal strip as defined in claim 1, wherein the lead content of said coating is not more than 0.01 weight percent.

13. A coated metal strip as defined in claim 12, wherein said ultra-thin metal intermediate layer is plated onto said metal strip and has a thickness of up to 3 microns.

14. A coated metal strip as defined in claim 1, wherein the thickness of said coating is at least 0.0001 inch.

15. A coated metal strip as defined in claim 1, wherein said ultra-thin metal intermediate layer is plated onto said metal strip and has a thickness of up to 3 microns.

16. A coated metal strip as defined in claim 1, wherein metal strip is an alloy of iron with an alloying metal selected from the group consisting of chromium, nickel, carbon, molybdenum, silicon, manganese, titanium, boron, copper, aluminum and mixtures thereof.

17. A coated metal strip as defined in claim 1, including an intermetallic layer formed between the surface of said strip and said hot dip coating, said intermetallic layer having a thickness of 1-10 microns.

18. A coated metal strip as defined in claim 1, wherein said ultra-thin metal intermediate layer is plated onto said metal strip and has a thickness of up to 3 microns.

19. A coated metal strip as defined in claim 18, wherein said ultra-thin intermediate metal layer on said strip is heated prior to said strip being hot dip coated.

20. A coated metal strip as defined in claim 19, wherein said ultra-thin intermediate layer is tin.

21. A coated metal strip as defined in claim 1, wherein said ultra-thin intermediate layer is copper.

22. A coated metal strip as defined in claim 1, wherein said ultra-thin intermediate layer is chromium.

23. A coated metal strip having a thickness of 0.005-0.2 inch and supplied from a coil and plated with an intermediate metal layer of up to 3 microns thick, and coating said plated strip by continuously passing said plated strip in a longitudinal direction at a speed through a molten bath of metal alloy having a temperature of at least 449°

F. such that the residence time of said plated strip in said molten bath is 0.166-10 minutes to deposit an impervious layer of said metal alloy on the surface of said plated strip and form an intermetallic layer between said strip surface and said coating, said coating having a generally uniform thickness of 0.0001-0.05 inch along the length of said strip and including at least about 15 weight percent tin, at least about 10 weight percent zinc and an effective amount of metallic stabilizer selected from the group consisting of antimony, bismuth, copper and mixtures thereof, said intermetallic layer having a thickness of 1-10 microns and comprising a heat created multi-phase interface alloy created from a mixture of said metal strip, said intermediate metal barrier layer and said metal alloy.

24. A coated metal strip as defined in claim 23, wherein said residence time in said molten alloy is less than one minute.

25. A coated metal strip as defined in claim 23, wherein said intermetallic layer includes iron and tin.

26. A coated strip as in claim 23, wherein said continuous hot dipped procedure has an operation line speed such that the residence time of said strip in said molten bath is less than one minute.

27. A coated metal strip as defined in claim 23, wherein said strip is stainless steel.

28. A coated metal strip as defined in claim 27, wherein said intermediate metal layer is chromium.

29. A coated metal strip as defined in claim 27, wherein said intermediate metal layer is copper.

30. A coated metal strip as defined in claim 27, wherein said intermediate metal layer is tin.

31. A coated metal strip as defined in claim 23, wherein said strip is copper.

32. A coated metal strip as defined in claim 31, wherein said intermediate metal layer is chromium.

33. A coated metal strip as defined in claim 31, wherein said intermediate metal layer is copper.

34. A coated metal strip as defined in claim 31, wherein said intermediate metal layer is tin.

35. A coated metal strip as defined in claim 23, wherein said intermediate metal layer is chromium.

36. A coated metal strip as defined in claim 23, wherein said intermediate metal layer is copper.

37. A coated metal strip as defined in claim 23, wherein said intermediate metal layer s tin.

38. A coated metal strip formed of a metal strip selected from the group consisting of carbon steel, stainless steel, copper, nickel alloys, tin, aluminum, bronze and titanium, said metal strip having a thickness of about 0.005-0.2 inch and supplied from a coil and plated with an intermediate metal layer of at least about 1 micron thick and of a metal selected from the group consisting of chromium, copper, nickel, tin or zinc, said metal strip and said ultra-thin intermediate layer heated prior to hot dip coating said metal strip, and coating said heated plated metal strip by continuously passing said heated plated strip in a longitudinal direction at a speed through a molten bath of metal alloy having a temperature of at least about 449°

F. such that the residence time of said heated plated metal strip in said molten bath is about 0.166-10 minutes to deposit an impervious layer of said metal alloy on the surface of said heated plated strip and forming an intermetallic layer between said strip surface and said coating, said coating having a generally uniform thickness of at least about 0.0001 inch along the length of said strip, said intermetallic layer having a thickness of about 1-10 microns and comprising a heat created multi-phase interface alloy created from a mixture of said metal strip, said intermediate metal layer and said metal alloy, said coating comprising at least about 15 weight percent tin, at least about 10 weight percent zinc, up to about 1.0 weight percent lead, and at least an effective amount of metallic stabilizer selected from the group consisting of antimony, bismuth, copper or mixtures thereof.
