1. For use in a radiotelephone system, a method of operating a radiotelephone in a discontinuous reception mode, comprising the steps of:

  • periodically activating at least a portion of a radiotelephone to receive a transmission, wherein a time period between periodic activations of the radiotelephone is predetermined to be a function of an integer multiple of a radiotelephone system time constant and also an integer multiple of a smallest partition of a transmission period; and

    receiving at least a portion of the transmission during a period subsequent to each periodic activation.
