Abstract

An electronic individual descriptive record system for storing the individual'"'"'s identification and descriptive data on a programmable electronic identification and data storage module carried with the individual so that the individual'"'"'s identification, the individual'"'"'s descriptive data and the individual itself become one. The system includes an implantable programmable electronic identification and data storage module carried by the individual, and a reading and recording device which communicates with the electronic identification and data storage module.

Claims

1. An individual descriptive record system comprising, in combination:

an implantable programmable electronic identification and data storage module carried with an individual, said module comprising means for storing identifying data unique to the individual, means for storing and processing cumulative descriptive data relating to the individual recorded throughout the lifetime of the individual, and means for receiving and transmitting said identifying and descriptive data, so that the individual'"'"'s identification, descriptive data and the individual itself are one, said module further comprising a power source including means for minimizing power consumption by substantially removing power to said module when it is not accessed; and

a reading and recording device for transmitting data to or receiving data from said identification and data storage module, said reading and recording device being constructed to read, add, or update data stored in said identification and data storage module.

2. The individual descriptive record system as defined in claim 1 wherein said descriptive data comprises health and medical information about the individual.

3. The individual descriptive record system as defined in claim 1 further comprising means for assuring the integrity of the identifying and performance data.

4. The individual descriptive record system as defined in claim 1 wherein said means for minimizing power consumption includes wake-up circuitry for signalling said module upon power-up when said module is accessed.

5. The individual descriptive record system as defined in claim 1 wherein said reading and recording device is a self-contained, portable, hand-held device.

6. An individual descriptive record system comprising, in combination:

an implantable programmable electronic identification and data storage module carried with an individual so that the individual'"'"'s identification, cumulative descriptive data recorded throughout the lifetime of the individual, and the individual itself are one, said module comprising, means for permanently storing fixed individual identification data, means for permanently storing said cumulative descriptive data, means for entering, revising, adding, and maintaining said descriptive data, means for transmitting said fixed identification data, means for receiving and transmitting said descriptive data, and a power source including means for minimizing power consumption by substantially removing power to said module when it is not accessed; and

a reading and recording device for communicating with said electronic identification and data storage module, said reading and recording device comprising, means for retrieving identification and descriptive data from said electronic identification and data storage module, means for storing said retrieved data, means for transmitting information to said electronic identification and data storage module for entering descriptive data or for revising descriptive data stored in said module, means for inputting and controlling the communications with the electronic identification and data storage module, means for displaying information transmitted to or received from said module, means for receiving information from a computer, means for transmitting information to a computer and means for storing information received from a computer.

The individual descriptive record system as defined in claim 6 further comprising a computer, said computer including means for permanently storing data from said electronic identification and data storage module, means for transmitting and receiving data from said reading and recording means, and means for storing information received from said reading and recording device.

8. The individual descriptive record system as defined in claim 6 wherein said descriptive data comprises health and medical information about the individual.

9. The individual descriptive record system as defined in claim 6 wherein said means for minimizing power consumption includes wake-up circuitry for signalling said module upon power-up when said module is accessed.

10. The individual descriptive record system as defined in claim 6 wherein said electronic identification and data storage module is an electronic integrated device.

11. The individual descriptive record system as defined in claim 10 wherein said electronic identification and data storage module includes a health monitoring system.

12. The individual descriptive record system as defined in claim 10 wherein said electronic identification and data storage module includes antenna means for transmitting and receiving communications.

13. The individual descriptive record system as defined in claim 10 wherein said electronic identification and data storage module is powered by a self-contained battery.

14. The individual descriptive record system as defined in claim 6 wherein said reading and recording device is portable, hand-held and self-contained.

15. The individual descriptive record system as defined in claim 14 wherein said displaying means of said reading and recording device provides a human readable visual display.

16. The individual descriptive record system as defined in claim 15 wherein said displaying means is a display screen mounted on the upper surface of the reading and recording device.

17. The individual descriptive record system as defined in claim 14 wherein said means for inputting and controlling said communications with said electronic identification and data storage module is an alphanumeric keypad.

18. The individual descriptive record system as defined in claim 14 wherein said reading and recording device is powered by a rechargeable battery.

19. The individual descriptive record system as defined in claim 14 wherein said reading and recording device includes means for analyzing retrieved data and means for verifying the integrity of the retrieved or transmitted data.

20. The individual descriptive record system as defined in claim 14 wherein said reading and recording device includes voice recognition circuitry.

21. The individual descriptive record system as defined in claim 7 wherein said computer is a microcomputer which is capable of transmitting and receiving communications with a central data network.

22. A method of maintaining individual descriptive records for identifying and monitoring individuals comprising:

implanting identification and descriptive data in an individual so that the individual'"'"'s identification and descriptive data and the individual itself are one, wherein said data is stored in a programmable electronic identification and data storage module;

accessing the individual by retrieving the identification data implanted in the individual;

retrieving the descriptive data implanted in the individual;

transmitting updated descriptive data to the individual so that the individual'"'"'s descriptive data is continuously maintained and accumulated in the individual; and

substantially removing power from said module when it is not being accessed.

23. The method as defined in claim 22 wherein the accessing, retrieving, and transmitting is performed with a reading and recording device which communicates with the programmable electronic identification and data storage module.

24. The method as defined in claim 22 wherein said descriptive data comprises health and medical information about the individual.

25. An individual medical record system comprising, in combination:

an implantable programmable electronic identification and data storage module carried with an individual, said module comprising means for storing identifying data unique to the individual, means for storing and processing cumulative medical data relating to the individual, and means for receiving and transmitting said identifying and medical data, so that the individual'"'"'s identification, medical data and the individual itself are one, said module further comprising a power source including means for minimizing power consumption by substantially removing power to said module when it is not accessed; and

a reading and recording device for transmitting data to or receiving data from said identification and data storage module, said recording and receiving device being constructed to read, add, or update data stored in said identification and data storage module.

26. The individual medical record system as defined in claim 25 further comprising means for assuring the integrity of the identifying and performance data.

27. The individual medical record system as defined in claim 25 wherein said means for minimizing power consumption includes wake-up circuitry for signalling said module upon power-up when said module is accessed.

28. The individual medical record system as defined in claim 25 wherein said reading and recording device is a self-contained, portable, hand-held device.

29. The individual medical record system as defined in claim 25 wherein said reading and recording device includes voice recognition circuitry.

30. The individual medical record system as defined in claim 25 wherein said electronic identification and data storage module is an electronic integrated device.

31. The individual medical record system as defined in claim 25 wherein said electronic identification and data storage module includes a health monitoring system.
