1. A device to be incorporated in a housing of an operation section of an endoscope, for operating a bending mechanism incorporated in an insertion section of the endoscope, said device comprising:

  • an operation shaft having;

    a distal end portion connected to the bending mechanism, anda proximal end portion projecting from the operation section of the endoscope; and

    holding means mounted on said distal end portion of said operation shaft for causing rotation of said operation shaft, and said holding means comprising a plurality of covers which are joined together to form a hollow cylindrical member which forms a space around said operation shaft; and

    wherein said plurality of covers comprise an upper cover and a lower cover which form an outside surface of said hollow cylindrical member of said holding means, and wherein said upper and lower covers abut each other to form an interface on said outside surface.
