Mechanism for improving television display of still images using image motion-dependent filter
First Claim
1. For use with a digitized image processing system including a digital data base, a method for controlling the manner in which a digitized image is read from the data base for display and manipulation, said method comprising the steps of:
- (a) generating a data base for storing a plurality of image data files containing digitized image data representing a plurality of images;
(b) selectively reading the image data from the image data files for display and manipulation in response to user commands;
(c) generating a single video index code in association with each image, said single video index code having a first value when the image is to be manipulated as per a user command and a second value in the absence of manipulation;
(d) providing a signal processing circuit for controllably processing said digitized image; and
(e) causing said signal processing circuit to process said digitized image in accordance with a first signal processing mechanism in response to said video index code having said first value, and causing said signal processing circuit to process said digitized image in accordance with a second signal processing mechanism in response to said video index code having said second value.

Abstract
An image motion-dependent mechanism selectively inserts an image modification operator, such as a median filter, into the image signal path of a video display unit, so that loss of definition and introduction of flicker resulting from the use of a median filter in the course Of the display of a still or stationary image on an IDTV are effectively eliminated. The selectively inserted image modification operator, which responds to an index code or bit value representative of whether or not the image frame is repeated, may also serve to prevent the generation of cross-luminance and cross-color decoding artifacts, as well as reducing the amount of random noise in the image.

4. A television receiver for converting video frames derived from static image-containing television signals into viewable images, said receiver comprising:
-
a display screen which displays processed television signals; a first circuit for processing moving frame television images obtained from manipulation of the static signals; a second circuit for processing repeat frame television images; and a circuit selector, responsive to a single video index code in association with each video frame, said single video index code indicative of whether the a respective video frame is a repeat frame, wherein said selector is operative to couple the output of one of said first and second processing circuits to said display screen in response to said video index code. - View Dependent Claims (5)
