Abstract

An apparatus and method for thermostatically controlling the operation of a multiple speed fan and light assembly by inputting a desired temperature range and airflow direction for each fan speed and by inputting a single number for controlling the on time and duration of the light assembly. A temperature sensor determines an initial room temperature, an input device enters a temperature set-point corresponding to each of the fan speeds, a processor stores the temperature set-points corresponding to each of the fan speeds from the input device, receives the temperature signal and uses the temperature signal and the temperature set-points to determine a desired fan speed, and a fan driving device changes the initial rotation speed to the desired fan speed in response to the processor and thereby automatically controls the fan speed.

Claims

1. An apparatus for controlling the operation of a multi-speed fan operable at a plurality of fan speeds comprising:

a temperature sensor which generates a temperature signal indicative of room temperature;

an input device which enables a user to independently enter a temperature set-point corresponding to each fan speed, such that each temperature set-point is established independent of every other temperature set-point;

a memory device for storing the temperature set-points entered by said input device corresponding to each fan speed;

a processor for receiving the temperature signal from said temperature sensor, accessing said memory device to receive the temperature set-points and determining a desired fan speed by comparing the temperature signal with at least one of the temperature set-points; and

a fan driving device responsive to the desired fan speed provided by said first processor to drive the multi-speed fan at the desired fan speed.

2. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein said processor and said fan driving device are remotely located with respect to each other and further comprising:

a transmitter unit which transmits a desired speed signal indicative of the desired fan speed; and

a receiver unit which receives the desired speed signal and provides the desired speed signal to said fan driving device.

3. The apparatus of claim 2 wherein the desired speed signal is an RF signal.

4. The apparatus of claim 2 wherein said transmitter unit is a portable device.

5. The apparatus of claim 2 wherein said receiver unit is operatively disposed adjacent to the multi-speed fan.

The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the multi-speed fan is operating at an operating fan speed and wherein said processor determines the desired fan speed to be a faster fan speed if the temperature signal is greater than or equal to the temperature set-point corresponding to a faster fan speed and determines the desired fan speed to be a slower fan speed if the temperature signal is less than the temperature set-point corresponding to the operating fan speed.

7. The apparatus of claim 6 wherein said processor and said fan driving device are remotely located with respect to each other and further comprising:

a transmitter unit which transmits an increase speed signal if the desired fan speed is a faster fan speed and a decrease speed signal if the desired fan speed is a slower fan speed; and

a receiver unit which receives the increase speed and decrease speed signals and provides the increase speed and decrease speed signals to said fan driving device, said fan driving device increasing the operating fan speed in response to the increase speed signals and decreasing the operating fan speed in response to the decrease speed signals.

8. The apparatus of claim 7, the fan comprising a ceiling fan operable to cause air to flow in an upward or downward direction relative to the ceiling, and

wherein said input device further enables a user to enter a desired airflow direction corresponding to each fan speed,

wherein said memory device stores the airflow direction value entered by said input device corresponding to each fan speed,

wherein said processor further determines a desired airflow direction as the airflow direction corresponding to the desired fan speed, and

wherein said fan driving device is responsive to the desired airflow direction provided by said processor to drive the multi-speed fan in the desired airflow direction.

9. The apparatus of claim 1, said fan comprising a ceiling fan operable to cause air to flow in an upward or downward direction relative to the ceiling, and

wherein said input device further enables a user to enter a desired airflow direction corresponding to each fan speed,

wherein said memory device stores the airflow direction value entered by said input device corresponding to each fan speed,

wherein said processor further determines a desired airflow direction as the airflow direction corresponding to the desired fan speed, and

wherein said fan driving device is responsive to the desired airflow direction provided by said processor to drive the multi-speed fan in the desired airflow direction.

10. The apparatus of claim 1 further comprising a light operatively associated with the fan.

11. The apparatus of claim 10 further comprising:

a clock for providing a time of day signal;

wherein said input device further enables a user to select a schedule for the light;

wherein said processor is further responsive to the time of day signal and the schedule from said input device to generate a light control signal for operating the light in real time; and

a light driving device connected to the light for turning the light on and off in response to the light control signal from said processor.

The apparatus of claim 11 wherein the input device enables the user to select a program number from a set of program numbers, wherein said memory device further stores a look-up table corresponding on-time values and duration values to a plurality of program numbers, and wherein said processor is responsive to a selected program number from said input device to index the look-up table to select the on-time value and the duration value.

The apparatus of claim 11 wherein the light comprises a multi-level illumination light, wherein said input device enables a user to select a desired illumination level, wherein the light control signal includes the desired illumination level and wherein said light driving device turns the light to the desired illumination level.

14. The apparatus of claim 13 further comprising:

a light override selection device which provides a light override signal to said processor, whereby the light override signal disables said processor from generating the light control signals responsive to the time of day signal and the schedule; and

a manual light control device which enables a user to selectively control the light, wherein said processor generates the light control signals responsive to the selected light control input by the user.

15. The apparatus of claim 14 wherein said processor and said light driving device are remotely located with respect to each other and further comprising:

a transmitter unit which transmits the light control signal from said processor; and

a receiver unit which receives the light control signal and provides the light control signal to said fan driving device.

16. The apparatus of claim 1 further comprising:

a fan override selection device which provides a fan override signal to said processor, whereby the fan override signal prevents said processor from determining the desired fan speed by comparing the temperature signal and the temperature set-points; and

a manual fan control device which enables a user to selectively determine the desired fan speed, wherein said processor determines the desired fan speed responsive to said manual fan control device.

17. The apparatus of claim 16 wherein said processor and said fan driving device are remotely located with respect to each other and further comprising:

a transmitter unit which transmits a desired speed signal indicative of the desired fan speed; and

a receiver unit which receives the desired speed signal and provides the desired speed signal to said fan driving device.

18. A method of operating a multi-speed ceiling fan at a plurality of fan speeds comprising the steps of:

independently selecting through an input device a temperature set-point corresponding to each ceiling fan speed, such that each temperature set-point is established independent of every other temperature set-point;

storing the temperature set-points entered by said input device corresponding to each fan speed;

measuring a room temperature value;

determining a desired fan speed by comparing the room temperature value with at least one of the temperature set-points; and

driving the fan at the desired fan speed.

19. The method of claim 18 further comprising the steps of:

selecting through an input device an airflow direction as either an upward or downward direction corresponding to each ceiling fan speed;

storing the airflow direction corresponding to each ceiling fan speed; and

driving the fan to cause the air to flow in the airflow direction corresponding to the desired ceiling fan speed.

20. The method of claim 18 wherein said step of selecting comprises the steps of:

a) selecting through said input device a temperature set-point for the highest fan speed;

b) selecting through said input device a temperature set-point for a lower fan speed; and

c) repeating step b) until a temperature set-point for a lowest fan speed is selected.

24. The method of claim 18 further comprising the steps of:

selecting through the input device a demonstration mode; and

demonstrating one or more operation of the multiple speed fan in response to the demonstration mode selection.

25. The method of claim 18 further comprising the steps of:

storing a winter mode program comprising a temperature set-point and airflow direction for each of the multiple fan speeds;

selecting winter mode; and

generating in real time a desired fan speed signal for operating the fan from the stored temperature set-points and airflow directions.

21. A method of operating a multi-speed ceiling fan at a plurality of fan speeds comprising the steps of:

selecting through said input device a temperature set-point for the highest fan speed;

b) selecting through an input device an airflow direction corresponding to the temperature set-point for the highest fan speed;

c) selecting through said input device a temperature set-point for a lower fan speed and an airflow direction corresponding to the temperature set-point for the lower fan speed;

d) repeating step c) until a temperature set-point for a lowest fan speed is selected;

e) storing the temperature set-points and airflow directions entered by said input device corresponding to each fan speed;

f) measuring a room temperature value;

g) determining a desired fan speed and a desired airflow direction by comparing the room temperature value and the temperature set-points; and

h) driving the fan at the desired fan speed and in the desired airflow direction.

22. The method of claim 21 wherein the ceiling fan is connected to a light and further comprising the steps of:

selecting a program number for the light from a set of program numbers;

generating a time of day value;

storing a look-up table in which each program number in the set of program numbers corresponds to a particular on-time value and duration value for the light;

selecting from the look-up table the on-time value and duration value corresponding to the selected program number by using the program number as an index into the look-up table;

generating in real time a light control signal for operating the light from the selected on-time value and duration value and the time of day signal; and

turning the light on and off in response to the light control signal.

23. The method of claim 22 wherein the light comprises a multi-level illumination light and further comprising the steps of:

selecting a desired illumination level of the light, wherein the light control signal includes the desired illumination level; and

turning the light to the desired illumination level in response to the light control signal.

26. A method of operating a light associated with a ceiling fan comprising the steps of:

selecting a program number from a set of program numbers;

displaying the selected program number to enable a user to determine which program number has been selected;

storing a look-up table comprising the set of program numbers with each program number in the set of program numbers corresponding to a particular on-time value and duration value for the light;

selecting the on-time value and duration value corresponding to the selected program number by using the program number as an index into the look-up table;

generating a time of day signal;

generating a light control signal for operating the light in real time from the selected on-time value and duration value and the time of day signal; and

turning the light on and off in response to the light control signal.

27. The method of claim 26 wherein the light comprises a multi-level illumination light and further comprising the steps of:

selecting a desired illumination level of the light;

displaying the selected desired illumination level;

including the desired illumination level in the light control signal; and

turning the light to the desired illumination level in response to the light control signal.

28. The method of claim 26 further comprising the steps of:

selecting random mode operation of the light;

generating light control signals randomly when the time of day signal is greater than the selected on-time value and less than the sum of the selected on-time and the selected duration value.

29. An apparatus for controlling the operation of a multi-speed fan operable at a plurality of fan speeds and airflow directions and having a multi-level illumination light associated therewith, comprising:

a temperature sensor which generates a temperature signal indicative of room temperature;

an input device which enables a user to independently enter a temperature set-point, such that each temperature set-point is established independent of every other temperature set-point, and an airflow direction corresponding to each fan speed and to select a program number from a set of program numbers;

a clock which provides a time of day signal;

a memory device for storing the temperature set-points entered by said input device corresponding to each fan speed and a look-up table in which each program number in the set of program numbers corresponds to a particular on-time value and duration value for the light;

a processor for receiving the temperature signal from said temperature sensor and determining a desired fan speed by comparing the temperature signal with at least one of the temperature set-points, said processor further responsive to a selected program number from said input device to index the look-up table in said memory device to select the on-time value and duration value corresponding to the selected program number, said processor generating a light control signal for operating said light in real time from the selected on-time value and duration value and the time of day signal;

a transmitter unit for transmitting an increase fan speed signal if the desired speed is faster than the operating fan speed, and a decrease fan speed signal if the desired fan speed is slower than the operating fan speed, said increase and decrease fan speed signals including the airflow direction corresponding to the desired fan speed, said transmitter further transmitting the light control signal from said processor;

a receiver unit for receiving said increase and decrease fan speed signals and said light control signal;

a fan driving device connected to the fan and responsive to the increase and decrease speed signals provided by said receiver to drive the multi-speed fan at the desired fan speed; and

a light driving device associated with the light for turning the light on and off in response to the light control signal.
