Digital sub-band transmission system with transmission of an additional signal
First Claim
1. A digital transmission system, for transmitting a digital signal comprising a plurality of information signal components including at least a first component, a second component and a first auxiliary component, over a transmission medium from a transmitter to a receiver, whereinsaid transmitter comprises:
- an encoder including analysis means for altering and data-reducing said first component and second component to obtain a number n of sub-signals for each of said first component and second component,means for combining said number n of sub-signals for each of said first component and said second component and a signal corresponding to said first auxiliary component to form said digital signal, andtransmission means for transmitting said digital signal via the transmission medium, andsaid receiver comprises;
receiving means for receiving said digital signal,derivation means for deriving said number n of sub-signals for each of said first component and said second component and said signal corresponding to said first auxiliary component from the received digital signal, anda decoder for obtaining respective replicas of the information signal components, said decoder including synthesis means for expanding and combining said sub-signals for said first component and for expanding and combining said sub-signals for said second component.

Abstract
A transmission channel may be utilized for a combination of wide-band signals and auxiliary signals, while still providing improved reproduction accuracy. Digital sub-signals or subband signals representing at least first and second data-reduced components are combined with at least one auxiliary digital signal in defined frame portions before transmission. The auxiliary signal may be user-discernible information such as third and fourth audio channels, so that a four channel surround sound signal is transmitted; or teletext or video or picture information may be provided. Sampling reduction and filtering into subbands may be applied to the auxiliary signal as well as to the first and second signal components.
