Abstract

A computer terminal is disclosed which allows enhanced local configurability by permitting the user of the terminal to display information received from a remote host in a variety of ways which may be customized by the user without any programming efforts. Specifically, the terminal recognizes each screen of information downloaded from the remote host, and processes that screen in a manner easily definable by the user. This includes translation of literals to other languages, as well as "look and feel" attributes, such as color, etc.

Claims

1. A user terminal for connecting to a remote host comprising:

means for receiving information to be displayed as a first image on a screen;

means for processing said information to generate a screen identification ("ID") from said first image, said ID being generated as a function of the number, location, and length of each field in said first image said ID uniquely identifying said first image;

means for comparing said generated ID to a list of stored IDs, and for selecting display parameters associated with a stored ID which matches said generated ID; and

means for displaying said information on a user display as a second image having display parameters associated with said stored ID, said second image being determined based upon the generated ID.

The terminal of claim 1 further including means for determining whether or not a value included in a predetermined field is a predetermined first value, displaying a second value in the predetermined field if the first value is contained in said predetermined field, and for displaying whatever value is in said predetermined field if said value in said predetermined field is not said first value.

3. Apparatus of claim 1 wherein said means for processing further includes means for determining the value of a particular field chosen by a user to identify said screen as unique.

4. Apparatus of claim 3 further comprising means for altering functions performed by specified function keys based upon said cursor position.
