1. A method of communicating synchronous fixed boundary frames of variable rate data from a transmitter to a receiver, the method including steps of:

  • generating, at the transmitter, a first frame of data at a first frame data rate and a second frame of data at a second frame data rate subsequent to said first frame of data, wherein the first frame of data includes a second frame data rate indicator which indicates the second frame data ratewherein the generating step includes a step of encoding, at the first frame data rate, the first frame data and the second frame data rate indicator;

    transmitting, from the transmitter, the first frame of data;

    receiving, at the receiver, the first frame of data; and

    analyzing, at the receiver, the first frame of data to determine the second frame data rate from the second frame data rate indicator.
