First Claim
1. An electrical appliance, having a sealed case surrounding a battery having at least one fluid depolarized electrochemical cell, and being powered by said battery, comprising:
- at least one semiconductor microactuator valve means for allowing the admission of depolarizing fluid only when said valve means is operated;
means for actuating said electrical appliance with at least an "on" position;
means for electrically connecting said means for actuating said electrical appliance in series with said battery and said at least one valve; and
means for disposing said at least one valve means on said case as the sole means for admitting depolarizing fluid into said case, so that when said means for actuating said electrical appliance is operated to said "on" position, said valve means allows the admission of fluid into said case to operate said battery.

Abstract
The placement in an electrical appliance of one or more tiny electrically activated thermally responsive semiconductor microactuators (a "valve-on-a-chip") disposed over the fluid entrance inlet(s) to regulate fluid flow to a gas depolarized electrochemical battery creates an efficient gas depolarized electrochemical power supply and appliance which permits the entrance of oxygen from air to the battery only when the battery is supplying electrical power to a load. Power for the valve is preferably derived from the battery itself but could be provided by a separate source within or without the battery. This tiny valve acts as a safety pressure vent and can act as a safety fuse as well. When electrical power is not required from the battery, the valve excludes entry of harmful impurities and unneeded fluid reactants thereby increasing the life of the battery during storage or when the electrical appliance the battery is powering is idle. A resistance means in parallel to the actuator valve is useful to enhance the operation of the power supply. If the battery leaks, the corrosive fluid causes the valve and/or battery to cease to operate. The potential combination with a recharging apparatus is also useful. The appliance may be designed to regulate the flow of reactant.

9. An electrical appliance, having a sealed housing surrounding a battery having at least one fluid depolarized electrochemical cell, and being powered by said at least one cell, comprising:

at least one semiconductor microactuator valve means for allowing the admission of depolarizing fluid into said sealed housing only when said valve means is operated, having a case, and containing at least one slide means for occluding fluid flow into said case having at least two grids of apertures and having an open position and a normally closed position; means for actuating said electrical appliance having at least an on position and an off position; means for electrically connecting said means for actuating said electrical appliance in series with said battery and said at least one valve means; means for disposing said slide means on said case for occluding fluid flow and as the sole means for admitting depolarizing fluid into said case so that in said open position, the slide means provides the sole means for admission of depolarizing fluid into said case and in said normally closed position, said slide means seals said case; and means for mechanically coupling each said at least one valve means to each said at least one slide means so that when said means for actuating said electrical appliance is operated to said on position, said valve means moves said slide means to said open position, and depolarizing fluid is admitted into said case to operate said battery and when said means for actuating said electrical appliance is operated to said off position, said valve means moves said slide means to said normally closed position. - View Dependent Claims (10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16)

17. An electrical appliance, having a sealed case surrounding a battery having at least one fluid depolarized electrochemical cell, and being powered by said battery, comprising:

means for actuating said electrical appliance; at least one semiconductor microactuator valve means, said valve means having a normally "closed" position, having two terminals, and having means for occluding fluid flow, said means for occluding fluid flow having two juxtaposed parallel grids of apertures so that in said normally "closed" position, said grids of apertures occlude fluid flow into said valve; means for disposing said valve means on said case to provide the sole means for admission of depolarizing fluid into said case; electrical resistance means on one of said at least two means for occluding fluid flow; means for electrically connecting said electrical resistance means to said two terminals; and means for connecting said means for actuating said electrical appliance, said battery and said terminals in series with said electrical appliance in order to heat said electrical resistance means upon operation of said means for actuating said electrical appliance, causing one of said grids of apertures to flex so that said grids of apertures are no longer juxtaposed which unseals said valve means allowing depolarizing fluid to be admitted into said case through at least one of said grids of apertures. - View Dependent Claims (18, 19, 20, 21, 22, 23, 24, 25)

26. A method of regulating depolarizing fluid flow into an electric appliance powered by a fluid depolarized electrochemical battery having at least one cell and having a sealed housing surrounding said battery, comprising:

disposing a semiconductor microactuator valve means for being the sole means of entry of depolarizing fluid into said sealed housing, said valve means having two terminals, inlet means and means for flexing upon application of heat to said means for flexing, which said means for flexing is mechanically or electromechanically coupled to a slide means having at least two parallel, juxtaposed grids of apertures disposed to cover said inlet means to occlude fluid flow into said valve means and said battery when said battery is not operating; affixing one of said grids of apertures to said valve means case; connecting an electrical resistance means between said two terminals; disposing said electrical resistance means to heat said means for flexing upon application of heat; connecting said two terminals in series with said battery, said appliance, and a means for actuating said appliance; disposing said at least one other grid of apertures in said slide means to slide, upon operation of said means for actuating said appliance, to admit depolarizing fluid into said appliance. - View Dependent Claims (27, 28, 29, 30, 31, 32, 33, 34, 35)
