Abstract

A marine speedometer system is disclosed which utilizes a short pitot tube or air column. The speedometer system includes an inlet having a short air column, a transducer, a control circuit, and a display. The electric signal from the transducer is representative of the pressure in the short air column. The control circuit preferably utilizes a microprocessor and a look-up table to generate a display signal in response to an electric signal from the transducer. The look-up table includes T-Buoy values and count values. The count values are used to drive a frequency signal for an air core meter. The display provides a needle and a metered background which is easy to read. The microprocessor is coupled to receive calibrate up and calibrate down signals. The microprocessor causes the needle to jump when it receives a signal to provide feedback to the driver. The microprocessor includes an auto zero subroutine which automatically calibrates the speedometer at start up.

Claims

1. A marine speedometer for use on a marine vessel traveling at a speed, the marine vessel including a speed sensor, the marine speedometer comprising:

a display;

a processor operatively coupled with the display and the speed sensor, the processor receiving a speed sense signal from the speed sensor and providing a marine speed signal indicative of the speed of the marine vessel in response to a software program and the speed sense signal, wherein the display provides visual indicia of the speed of the marine vessel in response to the marine speed signal; and

wherein the software program includes a look-up table for storing a plurality of T-Buoy values and a plurality of count values at locations addressed by a plurality of addresses, wherein the processor addresses a particular T-Buoy value of the T-Buoy values and a particular count value of the count values at a particular address to provide the marine speed signal.

2. The marine speedometer of claim 1 further comprising:

an increase input button for providing a speed increase signal coupled to the processor; and

a decrease input button for providing a speed decrease signal coupled to the processor, wherein the software adjusts the speed signal in response to the decrease input button and the increase input button.

3. The marine speedometer of claim 2, wherein the processor stores an offset value derived from the speed increase and speed decrease signals and increases and decrease the marine speed signal in accordance with the offset value.

4. The marine speedometer of claim 1 wherein the count value is representative of a frequency and the marine speed signal is squarewave of the frequency.

5. The marine speedometer of claim 4 wherein the look-up table is stored in an EPROM.

6. The marine speedometer for use on a marine vessel traveling at a speed, the marine vessel including a speed sensor, the marine speedometer comprising:

a display;

a speed input coupled to the speed sensor for receiving an electric speed signal from the speed sensor;

a processor, operatively coupled with the display and the speed input, wherein the processor provides a marine speed signal indicative of the speed in response to the electric speed signal, the display indicating the speed in response to the marine speed signal; and

a software program including an auto-zero calibration subroutine, the auto-zero calibration subroutine generating a value indicative of the electric speed signal at zero speed, the processor generating the marine speed signal in accordance with the auto-zero value.

The marine speedometer of claim 6, further including an increase input for receiving a speed increase signal, a decrease input for receiving a speed decrease signal, wherein the program increases the speed signal in response to the speed increase signal and decrease the speed signal in response to the speed decrease signal.

8. A marine speedometer system for use on a marine vessel traveling at a speed, the marine vessel including a speed sensor, the marine speedometer system comprising:

an increase input for receiving a speed increase signal;

a decrease input for receiving a speed decrease signal;

a processor coupled to the speed sensor, the processor receiving a speed sense signal from the speed sensor and providing a marine speed signal indicative of the speed of the marine vessel in response to the speed sensor signal, the processor couple to the increase input and the decrease input, the processor increasing the marine speed signal relative to the speed sense signal in response to the speed increase signal and deceasing the marine speed signal relative to the speed sense signal in response to the speed decrease signal;

a display for providing visual indicia of the speed of the vessel in response to the marine speed signal.

9. The marine speedometer system of claim 8 further comprising:

an increase input button coupled to the increase input; and

a decrease input button coupled to the decrease input.

10. The marine speedometer system of claim 9 wherein the speed increased signal and the speed increase signal are pulse signals.

11. The marine speedometer system of claim 8 wherein the processor stores an offset value derived from the speed increase and speed decrease signals and increases and decreases the speed signal in accordance with the offset value.

12. The marine speedometer of claim 11 wherein the offset value is stored in an EPROM.

13. A marine speedometer for use on a marine vessel traveling at a speed, the marine vessel including a speed sensor, the marine speedometer comprising:

a display, including an indicating needle;

a processor operatively coupled with the display and the speed sensor, wherein the processor provides a marine speed signal indicative of the speed in response to a speed sensor signal from the speed sensor, the display indicating the speed with the indicating needle in response to the marine speed signal;

an input for providing an input signal to the processor; and

wherein the processor cause the needle to jump when the processor receiving the input signal at the input.

14. The marine speedometer of claim 13 wherein the input signal is a calibration signal.

15. The marine speedometer of claim 14 wherein the processor causes the needle to jump by increasing the speed signal.
