Helically wound radio-frequency emitting electrodes for creating lesions in body tissue
First Claim
1. A device for ablating tissue within the body comprisingan element having an axis,a winding comprising spaced turns of energy emitting material wrapped about and along the axis of the element, anda sheath of a non-energy emitting material movable about the winding in one direction to expose more turns of the winding beyond the sheath and in another direction to cover more turns of the winding within the sheath, wherein the sheath carries an energy conveying contact touching at least one turn of the winding for conveying ablating energy from a source to the winding, the touching contact being advanced along successive turns of the winding during movement of the sheath to maintain the energy conveying contact.

Abstract
A device for ablating tissue within the body has an element with an energy emitting region helically wound about and along the axis of the element. The element emits energy to create a lesion in body tissue. A sheath of a non-energy emitting material is movable over the region to adjust the impedance of the region.

2. A device for ablating tissue within the body comprising
an element having an axis. a winding comprising spaced turns of energy emitting material wrapped about and along the axis of the element, and a sheath of a non-energy emitting material movable about the winding in one direction to expose more turns of the winding beyond the sheath and in another direction to cover more turns of the winding within the sheath, wherein the sheath carries an electrode region for emitting ablating energy, and means for maintaining the winding at one polarity while maintaining the electrode region at the opposite polarity.

3. A device for ablating tissue within the body comprising
a flexible guide element having an axis, a winding comprising spaced turns of energy emitting material wrapped about and along the axis of the element, means for flexing the winding along the axis of the element, a sheath of a non-energy emitting material movable about the winding in one direction to expose more turns of the winding beyond the sheath and in another direction to cover more turns of the winding within the sheath, the non-energy emitting material also being flexible, wherein the sheath carries an energy conveying contact touching at least one turn of the winding for conveying ablating energy from a source to the winding, the touching contact being advanced along successive turns of the winding during movement of the sheath to maintain the energy conveying contact.

7. A method for ablating tissue within the body comprising
introducing an element having an axis and being contained within a non-energy emitting sleeve having a distal end into the body, the element having an energy emitting region helically wound about and along the axis of the element for emitting energy to create a lesion in body tissue, moving said non-energy emitting sleeve along the length of the winding to to expose a variable length of said winding distally beyond the distal end of said sleeve to thereby alter the impedance of the winding, and, activating said electrode to ablate tissue while a selected length of said winding is exposed beyond said distal end.
