1. A method of implanting cells comprising the steps of:
- providing a device including a first implant assembly and a second implant assembly each having a chamber for holding cells defined by wall means including means for forming a porous boundary between the host tissue and the implanted cells in the chamber, the pore size of the boundary being sufficient to isolate the implanted cells from the immune response of the host tissue;
providing a tube member including a first and a second end, the first end being coupled to the first implant assembly and a second end being coupled to the second implant assembly;
implanting the device;
accessing the tube and severing the tube to provide access to the chambers of the first and second implant assemblies; and
adding cells through the severed tube to a first chamber of the first implant assembly and a second chamber of the second implant assembly.

Abstract
A method and apparatus for implanting cells in a host is provided. In an embodiment, an implant assembly for a host tissue is provided comprising wall means defining a chamber for holding cells for implantation, the wall means including means for foxing a porous boundary between the host tissue and the implanted cells in the chamber, the pore size of the boundary being sufficient to isolate the implanted cells from the immune response of the host tissue, and port means for providing selective access to the chamber.

7. A method for implanting cells into a host tissue comprising the steps of:
-
creating an implant assembly for holding cells including wall means for forming a porous boundary between the host tissue and the implanted cells in the implant assembly, the pore size of the boundary being sufficient to isolate the implanted cells from the immune response, the implant assembly including a port; adding cells to an interior of the implant assembly; testing the cells for therapeutic function prior to implanting the implant assembly; and adjusting the cell content of the assembly to modify therapeutic function by using the port. - View Dependent Claims (8, 9)
