Apparatus and method of imaging written information
First Claim
1. An electronic imaging system for imaging information as the information is traced on a surface, said system comprising:
- a stylus element for making contact with a surface;
a movement sensing means, coupled to said stylus element, for monitoring the deflection of said stylus element to generate signals representative of the movement of said stylus as said stylus moves across a first and a second axes on the surface,a contact sensing means for generating signals representative of the force exerting on said stylus, andtilt sensing means connected to said stylus element for determining an angle representative of the orientation between said stylus element and the writing surface.

Abstract
An image processing apparatus functioning as a writing device that images information as it is written on to a surface by measuring the forces applied at the stylus tip. The imaging device includes a ink pen cartridge and strain gauges mounted along the longitudinal axis of the cartridge. The strain gauges measure lateral forces deflecting the pen cartridge, and the longitudinal forces pressing the cartridge into the pen housing. Alternatively, strain gauges can also determine the force of the pen tip against the writing surface. The gauges generate signals representative of the forces applied to the pen point as the pen moves along or presses against a writing surface. A further set of sensors can be employed to determine movement and orientation of the device relative to the surface even when the pen is not in contact with the surface. Data representative of the written images are captured by analyzing the forces applied to the pen point.

15. A method for imaging information as the information is traced on a surface comprising:
-
applying a stylus to make contact with a surface; generating signals representative of an angle of inclination of the stylus relative to the surface, monitoring deflections of said stylus element to generate signals related to the force of contact of the stylus with the surface, and; generating signals related to the force of the stylus against a surface along at least two axes in the plane of the surface, such that said signals can be resolved to determine a pattern of the stylus on the surface. - View Dependent Claims (16, 17)
