Abstract

A method and apparatus for distributively interconnecting a plurality of land mobile trunked transmission communication systems into a wide area network includes a plurality of distributive radio network terminal (RNT) switch and a unique signaling protocol and a switching protocol especially adapted for communication of control signals in the subaudio band for interconnecting the trunked transmission communications systems into a wide area network that provides an expanded feature set of radio communications capabilities.

Claims

1. A remote network switch for a land mobile transmission trunked communication system, the land mobile transmission trunked communication system having a plurality of transceiver means for transmitting and receiving transmission trunked radio communications over one or more radio channels, the transmission trunked radio communications comprising an information signal having either voice information, data information, or both, and a control signal, and one or more repeater sites, each repeater site having a plurality of repeater means, each repeater means for establishing transmission trunked radio communications on a preassigned one of the radio channels between the repeater means and one or more transceiver means, and all of the repeater means at a repeater site operably connected together by a first bus means for synchronously communicating the control signals among the repeater means, the land mobile transmission trunked communication system further including access to an external communication network having one or more remote transceivers., the remote network switch comprising:

a plurality of repeater interface means, each repeater interface means operably connected to a unique one of the repeater means and to a second bus means separate from the first bus means for synchronously communicating both control and information signals between the remote network switch and the unique one of the repeater means;

one or more remote communication interface means for providing control and data information for establishing a remote communication between one or more of the transceiver means and the one or more remote transceivers in the external communication network; and

control means operably connected to all of the repeater interface means via the second bus means and to all of the remote communication interface means via a third bus means and responsive to the control and information signals received from both the interface means and the remote communication interface means for selectively interconnecting two or more of the repeater means, or one or more of the repeater means and one or more of the remote communication interface means.

The remote network switch of claim 1 wherein the remote communication is not locked to a single one of the repeater means and can be transmission trunked with the one or more of the transceiver means using one or more of the repeater means to transmit a plurality of separate transmission trunked radio communications between the one or more of the transceiver means and the one or more remote transceivers.

The remote network switch of claim 1 wherein each of the transceiver means and each of the remote transceiver means are assigned a unique identification number that is communicated as part of the control signals, and wherein the control means includes a network registration data base means for maintaining status information on each of the transceiver means in the wide area network according to the unique identification code assigned to each transceiver means.

The remote network switch of claim 3 wherein the status information includes cost accounting information, and wherein the control means will select the least expensive remote communication when two or more remote communication interface means could be used to connect a remote communication between one or more of the transceiver means and one or more of the remote transceiver means.

The remote network switch of claim 1 wherein all of the repeater means use the control signals to establish a distributed priority among the transceiver means such that a transceiver means will only attempt a transmission trunked radio communication if a predetermined priority code stored in the transceiver means is authorized for transmission in response to a priority code transmitted by all of the repeater means as part of the control signals.

A method for implementing a remote network switch for a land mobile transmission trunked communication system, the land mobile transmission trunked communication system having a plurality of transceivers for transmitting and receiving transmission trunked radio communications over one or more radio channels, the transmission trunked radio communications comprising an information signal having either voice information, data information, or both, and a control signal, and a plurality of repeater sites, each site having a plurality of repeaters, each repeater for establishing transmission trunked radio communications on a preassigned one of the radio channels between the repeater and one or more transceivers, and all of the repeaters at a repeater site operably connected together by a high speed bus for synchronously communicating the control signals among the repeaters, the method comprising the steps of:

selectively interconnecting two or more of the repeaters at two or more repeater sites in response to a control signal from a transceiver using a switch mechanism operably connected to each of the repeaters by a network bus separate from the high speed bus for synchronously communicating control and information signals between the repeaters and the switch mechanism; and

selectively interconnecting one or more of the repeaters with one or more external communication networks having one or more remote transceivers in response to a control signal from a transceiver in the land mobile transmission trunked communication system or a remote transceiver in the one or more external communication networks using the switch mechanism for communicating information and control signals among the one or more repeaters and the external communication networks.

The method of claim 6 wherein the remote communication is not locked to a single one of the repeaters and can be transmission trunked with the one or more of the transceivers using one or more of the repeaters to transmit a plurality of separate transmission trunked radio communications between the one or more of the transceivers and the one or more remote transceivers.

8. The method of claim 6 wherein each of the transceivers and each of the remote transceivers are assigned a unique identification number that is communicated as part of the control signals, and wherein the method comprises the further step of:

maintaining status information on each of the transceivers according to the unique identification code assigned to each transceiver.

The method of claim 8 wherein the status information includes cost accounting information, and wherein the step of selectively interconnecting one or more of the repeaters with one or more external communication networks will select the least expensive remote communication when two or more external communication networks could be used to connect a remote communication between one or more of the transceivers and one or more of the remote transceivers.

10. A method for distributively interconnecting a plurality of transceivers operating in a wide area network for a land mobile transmission trunked radio communication system using a remote network switch, the land mobile transmission trunked communication system having a plurality of transceivers for transmitting and receiving transmission trunked radio communications over one or more radio channels, the transmission trunked radio communications comprising an information signal having either voice information, data information, or both, and a control signal, and a plurality of repeater sites, each repeater site having a plurality of repeaters, each repeater for establishing transmission trunked radio communications on a preassigned one of the radio channels between the repeater and one or more of the transceivers in response to a control signal, and all of the repeaters at a repeater site operably connected together by a high speed bus for synchronously communicating the control signals among the repeaters, the wide area network having one or more external communication networks, each external communication network having one or more remote transceivers,the method comprising the steps of:

assigning a unique identification number to each transceiver and remote transceiver to be communicated as part of the control signals;

selectively interconnecting two or more of the repeaters in response to a control signal from a transceiver using a switch mechanism operably connected to each of the repeaters by a network bus separate from the high speed bus for synchronously communicating control and information signals between the repeaters and the switch mechanism; and

selectively interconnecting one or more of the repeaters with one or more external communication networks in response to a control signal from a transceiver or a remote transceiver using the switch mechanism for communicating information and control signals among the one or more repeaters and the external communication networks.

The method of claim 10 wherein the information signals for the transmission trunked radio communication are transmitted on a distributively selected one of the preassigned radio channels and the control signals for the transmission trunked radio communications are transmitted simultaneously in the subaudio range of the same channel over which the information signals are transmitted according to a predetermined control signal format.

12. The method of claim 11 wherein the predetermined control signal format comprises:

a first predetermined control signal format when the control signals are transmitted from the transceivers to the repeaters having;

a nine bit Sync field that initializes and synchronizes the repeaters;

a one bit Reserved field that indicates a transceiver control message;

a ten bit GoTo field that contains a directly decodable predetermined radio channel number of one of the repeaters to which the control signals are being transmitted;

a five bit Home field that contains a predetermined home number of the transceiver sending the control signal;

an eight bit Group field that contains a Group ID code of a fleet or subfleet of transceivers which are being called;

a three bit Status field that defines the status of the transceiver;

a thirteen bit Unique ID field that contains the unique identification number for the transceiver;

a three bit Priority field that indicates a predetermined priority level assigned to the transceivers; and

an eight bit Checksum field that includes a seven bit truncated BCH encoding scheme checksum and a single bit parity; and

a second predetermined control signal format when the control signals are transmitted from the repeaters to the transceivers having;

a nine bit Sync field that initializes and synchronizes the transceiver;

a one bit Reserved field that indicates a repeater control message;

a ten bit GoTo field that contains a directly decodable predetermined radio channel number of one of the repeaters that the transceiver should tune to in order to receive the control signals that are being transmitted by that repeater;

a five bit Home field that contains a predetermined home number of one of the repeaters;

an eight bit Group field that contains a Group ID code of a fleet or subfleet of transceivers which are being called;

a ten bit Free field that contains a directly decodable predetermined radio channel number of one of the repeaters that is not busy and is available for service;

a thirteen bit Unique ID field that contains the unique identification number for the transceiver;

a three bit Priority field that indicates a current operating priority level for all of the repeaters; and

an eight bit Checksum field that includes a seven bit truncated BCH encoding scheme checksum and a single bit parity.

13. The method of claim 12 wherein the first and second predetermined control signal formats are further encrypted using a two word encoding key to encode and decode each control signal transmission whereby a first word encoding key is used to encrypt the entire first or second predetermined control signal except the Sync field and a second word encoding key is used to encrypt the Checksum field.

14. The method of claim 10 wherein the control signals are communicated among the repeaters by the high speed bus according to a first bus protocol and wherein the control signals and the information signals are communicated between the repeaters and the switch mechanism by the network bus according to a second bus protocol.

The method of claim 14 wherein the first bus protocol is arranged into a plurality of messages, one message for each of the repeaters, each message having a predetermined number of words that are made up of a predetermined number of bits, and wherein the first bit of each word is a sync bit and only the first bit of the first word of a message is set to one to indicate the start of a new message and the first bit of all other words of the message are set to zero.

16. The method of claim 15 wherein each of the repeaters detects the sync bit for each message and if the sync bit is not present, updates a count of a number for the repeaters and checks for the sync bit of the next message from the next repeaters whereby the total time to transmit the messages according to the first bus protocol can be less than the total number of messages if one or more repeaters does not transmit a corresponding message.
