1. A remote network switch for a land mobile transmission trunked communication system, the land mobile transmission trunked communication system having a plurality of transceiver means for transmitting and receiving transmission trunked radio communications over one or more radio channels, the transmission trunked radio communications comprising an information signal having either voice information, data information, or both, and a control signal, and one or more repeater sites, each repeater site having a plurality of repeater means, each repeater means for establishing transmission trunked radio communications on a preassigned one of the radio channels between the repeater means and one or more transceiver means, and all of the repeater means at a repeater site operably connected together by a first bus means for synchronously communicating the control signals among the repeater means, the land mobile transmission trunked communication system further including access to an external communication network having one or more remote transceivers., the remote network switch comprising:
- a plurality of repeater interface means, each repeater interface means operably connected to a unique one of the repeater means and to a second bus means separate from the first bus means for synchronously communicating both control and information signals between the remote network switch and the unique one of the repeater means;
one or more remote communication interface means for providing control and data information for establishing a remote communication between one or more of the transceiver means and the one or more remote transceivers in the external communication network; and
control means operably connected to all of the repeater interface means via the second bus means and to all of the remote communication interface means via a third bus means and responsive to the control and information signals received from both the interface means and the remote communication interface means for selectively interconnecting two or more of the repeater means, or one or more of the repeater means and one or more of the remote communication interface means.

Abstract
A method and apparatus for distributively interconnecting a plurality of land mobile trunked transmission communication systems into a wide area network includes a plurality of distributive radio network terminal (RNT) switch and a unique signaling protocol and a switching protocol especially adapted for communication of control signals in the subaudio band for interconnecting the trunked transmission communications systems into a wide area network that provides an expanded feature set of radio communications capabilities.

A method for implementing a remote network switch for a land mobile transmission trunked communication system, the land mobile transmission trunked communication system having a plurality of transceivers for transmitting and receiving transmission trunked radio communications over one or more radio channels, the transmission trunked radio communications comprising an information signal having either voice information, data information, or both, and a control signal, and a plurality of repeater sites, each site having a plurality of repeaters, each repeater for establishing transmission trunked radio communications on a preassigned one of the radio channels between the repeater and one or more transceivers, and all of the repeaters at a repeater site operably connected together by a high speed bus for synchronously communicating the control signals among the repeaters, the method comprising the steps of:

selectively interconnecting two or more of the repeaters at two or more repeater sites in response to a control signal from a transceiver using a switch mechanism operably connected to each of the repeaters by a network bus separate from the high speed bus for synchronously communicating control and information signals between the repeaters and the switch mechanism; and selectively interconnecting one or more of the repeaters with one or more external communication networks having one or more remote transceivers in response to a control signal from a transceiver in the land mobile transmission trunked communication system or a remote transceiver in the one or more external communication networks using the switch mechanism for communicating information and control signals among the one or more repeaters and the external communication networks. - View Dependent Claims (7, 8, 9)

A method for distributively interconnecting a plurality of transceivers operating in a wide area network for a land mobile transmission trunked radio communication system using a remote network switch, the land mobile transmission trunked communication system having a plurality of transceivers for transmitting and receiving transmission trunked radio communications over one or more radio channels, the transmission trunked radio communications comprising an information signal having either voice information, data information, or both, and a control signal, and a plurality of repeater sites, each repeater site having a plurality of repeaters, each repeater for establishing transmission trunked radio communications on a preassigned one of the radio channels between the repeater and one or more of the transceivers in response to a control signal, and all of the repeaters at a repeater site operably connected together by a high speed bus for synchronously communicating the control signals among the repeaters, the wide area network having one or more external communication networks, each external communication network having one or more remote transceivers,the method comprising the steps of:

assigning a unique identification number to each transceiver and remote transceiver to be communicated as part of the control signals; selectively interconnecting two or more of the repeaters in response to a control signal from a transceiver using a switch mechanism operably connected to each of the repeaters by a network bus separate from the high speed bus for synchronously communicating control and information signals between the repeaters and the switch mechanism; and selectively interconnecting one or more of the repeaters with one or more external communication networks in response to a control signal from a transceiver or a remote transceiver using the switch mechanism for communicating information and control signals among the one or more repeaters and the external communication networks. - View Dependent Claims (11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16)
