Abstract

An improved spa control system is disclosed. The invention describes a spa control system which calculates the time required to heat the water in the spa system to a desired temperature. From that information, the heating rate of the spa system can be determined, and the heating element of the spa system can be activated at the proper time to raise the temperature of the water to a selected temperature by a desired time. The spa system also monitors information which might show errors in the operation of the spa system such as a blockage in the flow of water over the heating element in the spa system.

Claims

1. A spa system for controlling water, comprising:

a spa for holding the water;

a heater for heating the water;

a pump for circulating the water past said heater;

a first sensor for measuring the temperature of the water at a first location in said spa system and producing an output signal indicative thereof;

a second sensor for measuring the temperature of the water at a second location in said spa system and producing an output signal indicative thereof; and

a microcomputer for receiving said output signals from said first and second sensors, and for selectively activating and deactivating said heater or said pump.

2. A system as in claim 1, further comprising a control panel for providing input signals to said microcomputer positioned adjacent said spa.

3. A system as in claim 1, wherein said second sensor monitors water temperature in the vicinity of said heater and said first sensor monitors water temperature in said spa.

4. A system as in claim 3, wherein said microcomputer determines a temperature gradient relative to said first and second temperature sensors as an indication of water circulation.

5. A system as in claim 1, further comprising a third sensor for measuring the flow rate of the water in said spa system.

6. A system as in claim 4, wherein said microcomputer deactivates said heater when said temperature gradient falls outside of a threshold range indicating that the water is not circulating sufficiently.

7. A system as in claim 1, wherein the microcomputer compares the output signal from the first sensor to the output signal from the second sensor after a predetermined period of time has elapsed since pump activation.

8. A system as in claim 2, further comprising an interconnection panel located adjacent said spa, and wherein said microcomputer is located in said interconnection panel.

9. A control system for detecting the malfunction of components within a water system, comprising:

a display;

a pump;

a heating element;

a system interconnection panel which is connected to said pump and said heating element; and

a microcomputer within said system interconnection panel for monitoring operation of said pump or said heating element and for generating a signal to said display which provides an output signal on said display to indicate a malfunction of said pump or said heating element, and to provide a diagnosis of the malfunction.

10. A system as in claim 9, wherein the microcomputer monitors the number of hours of operation of the heating element and selectively provides an output signal to said display indicative of the number of hours of operation of the heating element.

11. A system as in claim 9, wherein the microcomputer monitors the number of hours of operation of the pump and selectively provides an output signal to said display indicative of the number of hours of operation of the pump.

12. A water control system for bathing, comprising:

an open container for holding water for bathing;

a heater element for heating said water;

a temperature sensor for monitoring the temperature of the water in said container;

a control panel positioned adjacent said container for controlling the temperature of said water;

a microprocessor electrically coupled to said control panel, said microprocessor programmable by a user via said control panel to control the operation of said heater element, said microprocessor also being capable of diagnosing failures in said water control system and providing an output signal to the control panel indicative of a source of the failures.

13. A system as in claim 12, wherein said microprocessor comprises an 8-bit CMOS device.

14. A system as in claim 12, wherein a high voltage power signal is provided to said system to operate said heater element, and further comprising isolation circuitry for isolating said microprocessor from said high voltage power signal.

15. A system as in claim 14, wherein said microprocessor connects electrically to a high voltage solid state switch to connect and disconnect the high voltage power signal to said heater element.

16. A system as in claim 14, further comprising an air blower and lights.

17. A system as in claim 12, further comprising a pump for circulating the water past said heater element.

18. A system as in claim 17, wherein said microprocessor measures zero-crossings of said high voltage power signal and only activates said pump during a zero-crossing point of said high voltage signal.

19. A system as in claim 17, wherein said microprocessor includes a freeze protection algorithm to automatically activate said pump when the temperature of the water falls below a first threshold temperature, and automatically activates said pump and said heater element when the temperature of the water falls below a second predetermined threshold temperature.

20. A controller for controlling the operation of a water system for bathing, comprising:

an open container for bathing;

a pump for circulating water in said container;

a heater element for heating the water;

a blower for providing a jetting action of the water in the container;

a high voltage power source for providing power to operate said pump and said heater element;

a control panel including an input device to permit a user to program user preferences, said control panel including electrical circuitry for providing an electrical output signal indicative of the user preferences selected by the user;

a microcomputer coupled to said control panel electrical circuitry for receiving the electrical output signal therefrom, said microcomputer monitoring the power source and including non-volatile memory for storing said user preferences when said power source falls below a threshold value;

wherein said microcomputer automatically controls future operation of said pump, said heater element, and said blower in accordance with the user preferences based upon instructions received from the user via the input device on said control panel.

21. A controller as in claim 20, wherein said microcomputer detects zero-crossings of the high voltage power source and coordinates activation of said pump, heating element and blower with said zero-crossing detection.

22. A controller system as in claim 20, wherein said pump is capable of operation at a first speed and a second speed, and in response to a need to change the speed of said pump from said first speed to said second speed, said microcomputer turns off said pump for a predetermined time period before activating said pump to operate at said second speed.

23. A controller system as in claim 20, further comprises a triac driven optoisolator connected between said microcomputer and said heater element.

24. A controller system as in claim 23, wherein said triac driven optoisolator is controlled by said microcomputer.

25. A controller system as in claim 20, wherein said microcomputer comprises a CMOS device.

26. A control system to control the operation of a spa, comprising:

a heating element for heating water in the spa;

a pump for circulating the water;

a power source connected to said heating element and to said pump, said power source having particular power characteristics;

a microcomputer for determining the power characteristics of the power source, and for controlling the operation of said heating element and said pump based upon the determined power characteristics of said power source.

27. A system as in claim 26, wherein the power characteristics include voltage amplitudes.

28. A programmable system for permitting a user to pre-program the operation of a spa system, comprising:

a spa for holding water;

at least a first device for affecting water movement and a second device affecting temperature in said spa;

a control panel with an input device for receiving input signals from the user reflecting user preferences for said spa system at a specified time in the future;

non-volatile memory for storing said user preferences in the event of a power loss condition;

a microcomputer coupled to said control panel and to said first and second devices, wherein the operation of said devices are automatically controlled at said specified time by said microcomputer based upon said user preferences.

29. A system including a spa for holding water, comprising:

a pump for circulating the water;

a plurality of temperature sensors for monitoring the flow of the water and producing an output signal indicative thereof;

a microcomputer electrically coupled to said pump, said microcomputer receiving output signals from said plurality of sensors;

wherein said microcomputer processes said output signals and deactivates said heater upon detecting the absence of water flow.

30. A system including a spa for holding water, comprising:

at least one sensor for monitoring a parameter of the water and producing output signals indicative thereof;

a panel having a display for displaying messages;

a microcomputer including a memory for storing user preferences, an input terminal for receiving said output signals from said sensor, and an algorithm for processing said user preferences and said output signals; and

wherein said microcomputer receives said output signals and processes said output signals in accordance with said user preferences, and said microcomputer stores historical information relating to said sensor in said memory for subsequently displaying on said panel.

31. A spa system with water for bathers, comprising:

a filter for filtering the water;

a pump for circulating water past said filter;

a heating element for heating the water;

a microcomputer including a non-volatile memory for storing data indicative of user preferences during periods of power loss; and

wherein said microcomputer automatically activates said pump and said heating element in accordance with the user preferences.

32. A system including a spa for holding water, comprising:

a plurality of sensors for monitoring and measuring various parameters of the water and producing output signals indicative thereof;

a plurality of devices for changing the parameters of the water;

a panel having a display;

a programmable unit including a memory for storing instructions, a real time clock, input terminals for receiving said output signals from said sensors, output terminals for sending signals to said devices, and a processing unit for processing said output signals from said sensors; and

33. A system with water for bathers, comprising:

a plurality of sensors for monitoring and measuring various parameters of the water and producing output signals indicative thereof;

a plurality of devices for changing the parameters of the water;

a display for displaying messages;

a programmable unit including a memory for storing instructions, input terminals for receiving said output signals from said sensors, and a processing unit for processing said instructions and said output signals; and

wherein said processing unit is capable of processing said output signals from said sensors in accordance with said instructions for determining potential problems within the system and displaying error messages on said display indicative of potential or actual problems in the system.

34. A system with water for bathers, comprising:

a pH sensor for measuring the pH of the water and producing an output signal indicative thereof;

a display for displaying messages;

a programmable device including a memory for storing instructions, input terminals for receiving said output signal from said pH sensor, and a program for processing said instructions and said output signal; and

said programmable device receiving said output signal from said pH sensor, processing said output signal in accordance with said instructions to determine whether the pH of the water is within a predetermined range stored in said memory, and sending a message to said display when the pH of the water is outside said predetermined range.

wherein said programmable unit determines the total number of hours of operation of each of said devices and indicates said total number of hours on said display.

35. A system including a spa for holding water, comprising:

a first temperature sensor positioned in the vicinity of the spa, said first temperature sensor producing output signals indicative of the spa water temperature;

a plurality of output devices for changing the parameters of the water including a heater and a pump;

said heater having a heater core for heating the water;

said pump circulating the water through the spa;

a second temperature sensor located in the vicinity of the heater core, said second temperature sensor producing output signals indicative of the water temperature in the heater;

a display for displaying messages;

a programmable panel for receiving user preferences;

a microcomputer receiving said output signals from said first and second temperature sensors, and processing said output signals in accordance with said user preferences to activate and deactivate said plurality of output devices, said microcomputer also analyzing said output signals from said first and second temperature sensors for malfunctions of said plurality of output devices and in response providing error messages on said display.

36. The system of claim 35, further including a sound device for emitting an audible sound upon the difference in the temperatures from said temperature sensors exceeding a predetermined amount.

37. The system according to claim 35, wherein if the difference in temperature readings from said temperature sensors exceeds a predetermined range, all spa operations are disabled and an error message is displayed on said display.

38. The system of claim 35, wherein said microcomputer monitors the rate of decrease and the rate of increase of the spa water temperature.

39. A system including a spa for holding water, comprising:

a plurality of input devices for monitoring and measuring various parameters of the water including at least one temperature sensor, said input devices producing output signals indicative of the parameters;

said at least one temperature sensor measuring the temperature of the water and producing an output signal indicative thereof;

a plurality of output devices for changing the parameters of the water including a heater and a pump;

said heater having a heater core for heating the water;

said pump having a low speed for circulating the water through said heater and a high speed for circulating the water through the spa;

a display for displaying messages;

a programmable panel for programming instructions;

a microcomputer controlling operation of said output devices based upon the output signals from said input devices;

said microcomputer deactivating said pump before changing the speed of said pump.

40. The system of claim 39, wherein said microcomputer automatically activates said pump at the low speed upon the activation of said heater.

42. The system of claim 39, wherein said microcomputer keeps the pump activated at the low speed for a predetermined period of time after the heater has been deactivated.

41. A system including a spa for holding water, comprising:

a pump for circulating the water, said pump being capable of operating at a first speed and a second speed;

a microcomputer electrically coupled to said pump for controlling pump activation and deactivation at said first and second speeds;

wherein, in response to a need to change the pump speed from the first speed to the second speed, said microcomputer deactivates said pump for a predetermined period of time before activating said pump at said second speed.
