Abstract

This invention relates to a substantially circular tablet dispenser component system which may be adapted for a variable day start of a prescribed periodic tablet regimen. Also provided are a tablet dispenser kit, a tablet package adapted for filling the tablet dispenser system, methods of filling the tablet dispenser of the invention and methods of administering a prescribed regimen of medication using the tablet dispenser system of the invention.

Claims

1. A tablet dispenser component system comprising:

as a first component a rotatable substantially circular unidirectional knob having indicators of periodicity thereon wherein the rotatable knob is encircled with a notched skirt comprising a plurality of notches spaced substantially equally apart, said rotatable knob having unidirectional ratchet means comprising a ratchet track with a plurality of ratchet stops whereby each positive engagement of said ratchet stops corresponds to a single space of each notch of the notched skirt;

as a second component a substantially flat support having a single tablet dispensing aperture therein and a rising wall portion protruding therefrom to form an interior cup portion thereon, a first engagement means whereby said rotatable knob is rotatably joined to said flat support, a fixed center axis means around which said rotatable knob is rotated in a circular fashion, and a second engagement means interposed with said unidirectional ratchet means forming a functional system therewith; and

a third component which is a separate and removable tablet package adapted to fit over the rotatable knob with means to positively engage the notched skirt such that the two components rotate in unison, said tablet package comprising a plurality of collapsible tablet pockets each containing a tablet arranged substantially circularly about the package whereby the spacing of the tablet pockets corresponds to each stop of the ratchet means whereby a new tablet is placed over the tablet dispensing aperture upon the positive engagement of each stop on the ratcheted rotatable knob, said tablet pockets being covered with a frangible membrane which is interposed between said pockets and the single tablet dispensing aperture of the support, whereby a tablet is dispensed from the package by collapsing the pocket which is in registry with said aperture thereby urging said tablet to fracture said membrane and pass through said aperture.

The tablet dispenser system of claim 1 wherein the substantially flat support and interior cup portion formed thereon by wall portions rising therefrom is provided with means for supporting the tablet package in a substantially circular path around the fixed center axis and rotatable knob and for interlocking the tablet package in place upon engagement of a first stop of the unidirectional ratcheted and rotatable knob, whereby the tablet package is removable from the support means upon completion of a full rotation of the ratcheted and rotatable knob.

3. The tablet dispenser system of claim 2 wherein the rotatable knob comprises a calendared ring which is unidirectionally rotatable in a clockwise direction about the fixed center axis and the notched skirt is attached to the periphery of the rotatable knob.

4. The tablet dispenser system of claim 3 wherein the fixed center axis has an indicator mark aligned with the single tablet dispensing aperture of the flat support component.

5. A tablet dispenser kit for the administration of oral contraceptives comprising a tablet dispenser system of claim 2 and oral contraceptive tablets.

6. The tablet dispenser system of claim 1 wherein the means to positively engage the notched skirt comprises at least two complementary projections to positively engage at least two notches in the notched skirt when fitted over the rotatable knob.

7. The tablet dispenser system of claim 1 wherein the collapsible tablet pockets are formed to accommodate tablets of substantially circular, non-circular or caplet-like shape.

The tablet dispenser system of claim 1 wherein the substantially flat support is adapted for receiving and interlocking the tablet package by the provision of at least two inward extending ledges protruding from the rising wall portion, whereby the shape and orientation of said ledges correspond to at least two complementary recesses on the tablet packages permitting reception of said tablet package onto the flat support in a single initial position of tablet orientation about the flat support whereby a designated tablet is positioned above the tablet dispensing aperture at the initial tablet position and the tablet package is interlocked upon a single advance of the rotatable knob by overlap with said ledges;

whereby said tablet package is not disengageable or removable until a complete rotation of the knob returns the tablet package to the initial tablet position.

The tablet dispenser system of claim 8 whereby the inward extending ledges are spatially arrayed to inhibit the receipt of the package on the substantially flat support and the disengagement, discharge or removal of the tablet package from the substantially flat support at any position other than the initial tablet position.

10. The tablet dispenser system of claim 9 wherein the spacial array of the inward extending ledges is asymmetrical.

11. The tablet dispenser system of claim 9 wherein the rotatable knob is marked with at least seven of the days of the week whereby each of said markings is oriented to a single tablet position in the tablet package corresponding to an indicated day of the week when engaged in the flat support to provide a single tablet corresponding to an indicated day of the week over the single tablet dispensing aperture of the flat support portion upon each advance of the positively engaging stop of the rotatable knob.

A method of filling the tablet dispenser system of claim 11 comprising the steps of rotating the rotatable knob marked with the days of the week to align the desired start day of the week with the initial tablet position, aligning at least two complementary recesses on the tablet package with at least two inward extending ledges protruding from the rising wall portion of the substantially flat support, and placing said tablet package onto the substantially flat support.

A method of filling the tablet dispenser system of claim 9 comprising the steps of aligning at least two complementary recesses on the tablet package with at least two inward extending ledges protruding from the rising wall portion of the substantially flat support and thereafter placing said tablet package onto the substantially flat support.

14. The tablet dispenser system of claim 8 whereby the inward extending ledges are shaped or sized to receive or disengage with the recesses of said notched tablet package only at the initial tablet position.

The tablet dispenser system of claim 14 wherein the rotatable knob is marked with at least seven of the days of the week whereby each of said markings is oriented to a single tablet position in the tablet package corresponding to an indicated day of the week when engaged in the flat support to provide a single tablet corresponding to an indicated day of the week over the single tablet dispensing aperture of the flat support portion upon each advance of the positively engaging stop of the rotatable knob.

16. A method of filling the tablet dispenser system of claim 15 comprising the steps of rotating the rotatable knob marked with the days of the week to align the desired start day of the week with the initial tablet position, aligning at least two complementary recesses on the tablet package with at least two inward extending ledges protruding from the rising wall portion of the substantially flat support, and placing said tablet package onto the substantially flat support.

17. A method of filling the tablet dispenser system of claim 14 comprising the step of aligning said at least two recesses on the tablet package with at least two inward extending ledges protruding from the rising wall portion of the substantially flat support and thereafter placing said tablet package onto the substantially flat support.

18. The filling method of claim 17 further comprising the subsequent steps of dispensing the initial tablet located at the initial tablet position and rotating the rotatable knob one stop to the next day in order to positively engage the tablet package in the tablet dispenser, thereby inhibiting disengagement of the package until a full rotation of the rotatable knob has been completed.

19. The tablet dispenser system of claim 8 wherein the rotatable knob is marked with at least seven of the days of the week whereby each of said markings is oriented to a single tablet position in the tablet package corresponding to an indicated day of the week when engaged in the flat support to provide a single tablet corresponding to an indicated day of the week over the single tablet dispensing aperture of the flat support upon each advance of the positively engaging stop of the rotatable knob.

20. A method of filling the tablet dispenser system of claim 19 comprising the steps of rotating the rotatable knob marked with the days of the week to align the desired start day of the week with the initial tablet position;

aligning at least two complementary recesses on the tablet package with at least two inward extending ledges protruding from the rising wall portion of the substantially flat support, and placing said tablet package onto the substantially flat support.

21. A tablet dispenser kit for the administration of oral contraceptives comprising a tablet dispenser system of claim 7 and oral contraceptive tablets.

22. A method of filling the tablet dispenser system of claim 8 comprising the steps of aligning at least two complementary recesses on the tablet package with at least two inward extending ledges protruding from the rising wall portion of the substantially flat support and thereafter placing said tablet package onto the substantially flat support.

23. The tablet dispenser system of claim 1 wherein the rotatable knob is marked with at least seven of the days of the week whereby each of said markings is oriented to a single tablet position in the tablet package corresponding to an indicated day of the week when engaged in the flat support to provide a single tablet corresponding to an indicated day of the week over the single tablet dispensing aperture of the flat support upon each advance of the positively engaging stop of the rotatable knob.

24. A tablet dispenser kit for the administration of oral contraceptives comprising a tablet dispenser system of claim 23 and oral contraceptive tablets.

25. A method of administering a prescribed regimen of tablet medication comprising the utilization of the tablet dispenser system of claim 23 in which the tablets deployed therein, and the orientation of the days of the week to each tablet position, are adapted to a prescribed regimen.

26. The method of claim 25 wherein the prescribed regimen provides oral contraceptive or hormone replacement therapy.

27. The tablet dispenser system of claim 1 wherein the calendared rotatable knob is provided with periodicity means consisting of days of the week in at least one set of seven images on the rotatable knob such that there is an ordered one-to-one correspondence of days with ratchet stops and such that any setting of the knob in relation to the indicator mark constitutes a predisposed start day setting for the package.

28. The tablet dispenser system of claim 1 further comprising a lid portion to provide an enclosed compact package.

29. The tablet dispenser system of claim 28 wherein the lid and support comprise interlocking means for engaging the compact package in a closed position.

30. A tablet dispenser kit for the administration of oral contraceptives comprising a tablet dispenser system of claim 1 and oral contraceptive tablets.

31. A tablet dispenser system for dispensing a regimen of tablets in a designated sequence comprising:

as a first element, a flat support having a single tablet dispensing aperture therein and an encircling wall portion erected thereto defining a cup-like interior;

as a second element, a pivot connected to the center of the flat support defining an axis;

as a third element a rotatable knob having a top surface with indicators of periodicity marked thereon in correspondence with the tablets, a means for gripping thereby to apply rotary force, and a central bore, sized for encircling the pivot;

as a fourth element, a first connecting means for rotatably connecting the rotatable knob coaxially to the flat support;

as a fifth element, a means for intermittent unidirectional advancement of the knob about the axis with registry corresponding to the aperture and the indicators of periodicity;

as a sixth element, a circular tablet package comprising a housing containing the tablets in a plurality of frangibly lidded collapsible tablet pockets arranged circularly about the package at a radial distance corresponding to the distance of the aperture from the axis and having a central bore sized for encircling the rotatable knob;

as a seventh element, a means for orienting the tablet package to the flat support whereby the first tablet is located over the aperture and misorientation of the tablet package to the flat support is prevented; and

as a eighth element, a second connecting means for connecting the tablet package to the rotatable knob upon loading onto the flat support for any initial setting of the knob such that rotary force applied to the knob is translated to the tablet package providing the manner in which the tablet package is advanced thereby causing each tablet of the regimen to be presented in the designated order, accompanied with the corresponding indicator of periodicity and registered by the intermittent unidirectional advancement means, to the aperture for the purpose of dispensing a single tablet at a time from the tablet dispenser by collapsing the collapsible tablet pocket positioned thereto and urging the tablet through the frangible lidding into and through the aperture.

32. The tablet dispenser of claim 31 comprising as an additional element a means for indicating the location of the aperture remaining visible after loading the tablet package thereby providing a fixed registry point.

33. The tablet dispenser system of claim 32 wherein the pivot comprises a stationary flat surface elevated above the flat support by a support means projecting through a through-bore of the rotatable knob after assembly thereto.

34. The tablet dispenser system of claim 33 wherein the support means comprises a stalk having means for orienting the pivot stationary flat surface to the flat support, and thereby to the indicating means, and further having means for fastening the stalk rigidly to the flat support.

35. The tablet dispenser system of claim 34 wherein the means for fastening the stalk comprises a cylindrical wall portion, attached to the flat support at its center and contained within the bore of the rotatable knob when assembled thereto, for receiving the pivot stalk with a friction fit to the interior surface of the cylindrical wall.

36. The tablet dispenser system of claim 35 wherein the means for orienting the stalk comprises a plurality of radial vanes extending inward from the cylindrical wall portion wherein said vanes nest within complementary slots in the base of the stalk when assembled thereto.

37. The tablet dispenser system of claim 34 wherein the first connecting means comprises an overlap of a pivot stationary flat surface bottom surface and a plurality of clockwise-tending spring pawls based at the bottom of a second interior cylindrical wall spacing the spring pawls beneath the inner edge of the top surface of the rotatable knob, thereby forming a recess, the second interior cylindrical wall closely encircling the pivot stationary flat surface interposed in the recess and positioned relative thereto in assembly by an essentially cylindrical exterior wall elevating the top surface to a point of contact between the spring pawls and the pivot stationary flat surface when bottomed on the flat support.

38. The tablet dispenser system of claim 37 wherein the means for intermittent unidirectional advancement of the rotatable knob comprises the plurality of clockwise-tending spring pawls cantilevered for an upward bias and arrayed to match a circular clockwise-tending ratchet track formed into the pivot stationary flat surface bottom surface, with ridge and recess geometry of a conventional design and in registry with the indicators of periodicity and the indicating means, the interaction of components such that the spring pawls are urged downward by the rotation of the ratchet track over sliding face surfaces of the spring pawls, the spring pawls subsequently clearing the ridges and springing back into the recesses of the ratchet track thus simultaneously interrupting the rotation, positively locating the rotatable knob, and locking against counterclockwise thrust through interference of abutting face surfaces of the spring pawls and ratchet track ridges.

39. A method of assembling the tablet dispenser system of claim 38 comprising the method of assembling the flat support, the rotatable knob and the pivot comprises the steps of placing the rotatable knob over the center of the flat support, orienting the pivot to the flat support with the pivot orienting means, and connecting the pivot to the flat support with the pivot fastening means while coaxially inserting the pivot stationary flat surface into the recess formed by the second interior cylindrical wall of the rotatable knob, overlapping the spring pawls and interposing the spring pawls and ratchet track for cooperation therebetween.

40. The tablet dispenser system of claim 33 wherein the indicating means comprises a mark placed on the stationary flat surface of the pivot at the aperture position thereby facilitating visual alignment with the indicator of periodicity corresponding to the aperture position.

41. The tablet dispenser system of claim 32 wherein the means for orienting the tablet package comprises a plurality of ledges extending inwardly from the encircling wall portion of the flat support coupled with cut-aways on the periphery of the tablet package, complementary with the ledges in geometry and location, the ledges having underclearance for the rotation of the tablet package thereunder and spaced sufficiently apart to frustrate loading by angling the periphery underneath the ledges without proper alignment with the cut-aways, the periphery having sufficient stiffness to prevent forceable entry of the tablet package to the flat support without alignment of the ledges and cut-aways, the proper alignment of features thereby permitting receipt of the tablet package onto the flat support, the bypass of ledges and cut-aways occurring in no other than the preferred tablet orientation as a result of means for uniquely matching ledge and cut-away pairs.

42. The tablet dispenser system of claim 41 further comprising stiffening means comprising a rigid skeletal structure underlaying the tablet housing with apertures appropriately positioned to allow for the discharge of tablets through the underlayer, the skeletal structure fixed by bonding means to the tablet housing.

43. The tablet dispenser system of claim 42 wherein the bonding means comprises a plurality of posts erected from the skeletal structure and inserted though pilot holes provided in the tablet housing and subsequently headed over in rivet fashion for securing the assembly therewith.

44. The tablet dispenser system of claim 41 wherein the means for uniquely matching ledge and cut-away pairs comprises differing shapes for the ledge and cut-away pairs such that only one orientation results in a match.

45. The tablet dispenser system of claim 41 wherein the means for uniquely matching ledge and cut-away pairs comprises differing sizes for the ledge and cut-away pairs such that only one orientation results in a match.

46. The tablet dispenser system of claim 41 wherein the means for uniquely matching ledge and cut-away pairs comprises an asymmetrical spatial array of pairs such that only one orientation results in a match.

47. The tablet dispenser of claim 41 wherein a second indicating means comprises one of the ledges located adjacent to the aperture which is uniquely shaped like a pointer.

48. The tablet dispenser of claim 32 wherein the indicators of periodicity are days of the week.

49. The tablet dispenser of claim 48 wherein the method for loading with selection of a preferred starting day comprises the steps of removing any previously loaded tablet package, rotating the rotatable knob until the desired day is aligned with the indicating means and loading the tablet package onto the flat support with registry of the designated first tablet to the desired day.

50. The tablet dispenser system of claim 31 further comprising a means for retaining the tablet package onto the flat support and in continuous connection with the rotatable knob.

51. The tablet dispenser system of claim 50 wherein the retaining means comprises a plurality of ledges extending inward with underclearance from the encircling wall portion of the flat support, the ledges matched to complementary cut-aways on the periphery of the tablet package thereby providing unique orientation during assembly, the ledges further overlapping the tablet package periphery for each position of the intermittent unidirectional advancement means other than the initial position, the ledges supplemented by a holding lug extending from a slotted portion of the encircling wall portion of the flat support, the holding lug having a ledge portion overlapping the tablet dispenser periphery for every position of the unidirectional advancement means and an inclined plane portion angled, during assembly, against the tablet package periphery such that downward force applied to the periphery flexes the slotted wall portion thereby allowing bypass of the tablet package and the holding lug, the spring-back of the slotted wall portion providing a tactile confirmation of the seating of the tablet package onto the flat support and in positive interlock with the rotatable knob.

52. The tablet dispenser system of claim 51 wherein the method of disengagement and removal of the tablet package from the tablet dispenser comprises the steps of indexing the rotatable knob to the initial position and lifting the tablet package from a location opposite the holding lug thereby clearing the ledges and pivoting over the lug into disengagement from the dispenser.

53. The tablet dispenser system of claim 31 further comprising a cover which encloses the tablet dispenser.

54. The tablet dispenser system of claim 53 wherein the cover is hinged to the flat support and secured in a closed position by a latch means.

55. The tablet dispenser of claim 31 wherein the second connecting means comprises a notched skirt extending outward from the base of the rotatable knob with identical notches in registry with the intermittent unidirectional advancement means and at least one complementarily shaped lug on the tablet package which is positioned for interlocking with a corresponding notch when assembled thereto.

56. The tablet dispenser of claim 55 wherein the lugs and notches are reversed with respect to the rotatable knob and the tablet package.

57. The tablet dispenser of claim 55 wherein only two diametrically opposed lugs are used to assure firm connection with the notched skirt while providing ease of assembly.

58. The tablet dispenser of claim 57 wherein the lugs are weakly attached by fragile necks to a rigid skeletal structure underlaying the tablet housing and bonded by posts joined to the lugs and headed over in rivet-fashion after insertion through the complementary pilot holes in the tablet housing, thereby forming a robust composite, the weak attachment being such that the removal of the spent tablet housing material ruptures the fragile necks through force applied at the post heads, thereby providing separation of materials for recycling and preventing unauthorized use of the skeletal structure.

59. The tablet dispenser system of claim 31 further comprising a plurality of said tablet packages wherein a spent tablet package after use is replaceable with a freshly loaded tablet package providing thereby for a reusable dispenser, extendable in use through multiple refill replenishment.

60. The tablet dispenser of claim 31 wherein the collapsible tablet pockets are formed to accommodate various shapes and sizes of tablets postured either on a surface or on edge.

61. The tablet dispenser of claim 31 wherein the gripping means comprises an edge formed by the intersection of the top surface with an essentially cylindrical exterior wall which elevates the edge to an accessible height.

62. The tablet dispenser of claim 61 wherein the edge is knurled to facilitate hand gripping.
