1. A surgical apparatus for fragmenting tissue comprising:
- a tissue grasping mechanism positioned adjacent a distal end of the surgical apparatus and movable between an open and closed position and defining a tissue receiving cavity therein;
a cutting member disposed in and around a periphery of the tissue receiving cavity in a position to morcellate tissue therein; and
a first actuation mechanism operably connected to the tissue grasping mechanism for remotely opening and closing the tissue grasping mechanism;
wherein the tissue grasping mechanism holds the tissue preparatory to the morcellating of the tissue by the cutting member.

Abstract
A surgical instrument is provided for the morcellation of bodily tissue or bodily organ parts during an endoscopic surgical procedure. The instrument includes a handle assembly and a tubular body portion extending from the handle assembly and defining a longitudinal axis. A tool assembly is associated with a distal end of the tubular body including cooperating jaw members and a cutting member. A first mechanism is for effectuating remote actuation of the cooperating jaw members and a second mechanism is for effectuating remote reciprocal movement of the cutting member with respect to the longitudinal axis of the tubular body.

7. A surgical apparatus comprising:

a handle assembly; a body portion extending from the handle assembly and defining a longitudinal axis; first and second jaw members mounted to the body portion for movement between an open position and a closed position, at least one of the first and second jaw members defining a tissue receiving cavity therein, such that when the first and second jaw members are in the closed position and prior to morcellating, said tissue receiving cavity being substantially closed by jaws such that tissue disposed in the tissue receiving cavity is substantially encapsulated by the first and second jaw members; a cutting member internal of at least one of the jaw members; and
extending into and around a periphery of said tissue receiving cavity; anda jaw actuation mechanism connected to the first jaw member; wherein the first jaw member is actuated between the open and the closed position by the jaw actuation mechanism. - View Dependent Claims (8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17)

a first handle assembly; a first elongated tubular body portion extending from the handle assembly and defining a longitudinal axis, the first body portion further including a longitudinal bore portion for receiving a grasping instrument therethrough; a first tool assembly connected to a distal end portion of the first body portion, the first tool assembly including first and second jaw members, the first jaw member being pivotally connected to the distal end of the first body portion, the second jaw member defining a tissue receiving cavity and having a cutting member disposed in and around a periphery of the tissue receiving cavity in a position to morcellate tissue therein; jaw actuation means for actuating the first jaw member between an open and a closed position; and means for effectuating movement of the cutting member with respect to the longitudinal axis of the first body portion. - View Dependent Claims (20, 21, 22, 23)

19. A surgical apparatus comprising:

a first handle assembly; an elongated tubular body portion extending from the handle assembly and defining a longitudinal axis, the tubular body portion further including a longitudinal bore portion; a tool assembly connected to a distal end portion of the tubular body portion, the tool assembly including a pair of cooperating jaw members and extending into and around a periphery of said tissue receiving cavity having an internal cutting member; a cutting member actuator mounted within the tubular body portion wherein movement of the actuator moves the cutting member relative to the jaw members; a grasping instrument inserted into the longitudinal bore portion, the grasping instrument having an elongated body portion including a tool assembly connected to a distal end of the elongated body portion of the grasping instrument, and a handle assembly connected to a proximal end of the elongated body portion of the grasping instrument to effectuate remote actuation of the grasping instrument tool assembly between an open position and a closed position.
