Abstract

A system and method for video-on-demand and videoconferencing services using a broadband switch network, a broadband session controller, and a broadband service control point. The broadband network provides connections between information sender/receivers in response to instructions from a broadband service control point or in response to requests originated by an information sender/receiver. The broadband service control point processing instructions and/or data to the broadband controller and information sender/receiver. In addition, an integrated service control point integrates broadband and telephone networks to provide efficient and effective integrated broadband and telephone services. Both broadband and telephone services can be provisioned via a video interface at a user'"'"'s remote location. Also, the integrated network provides unique caller identification delivery services.

Claims

1. A system for providing broadband information to a remote terminal, comprising:

a broadband switch network;

a remote terminal controller associated with said remote terminal;

a video information provider connected to said broadband switch network;

a broadband session controller for communicating with said remote terminal controller and said video information provider; and

a broadband service control point connected to said broadband session controller.

2. A system according to claim 1, further comprising an access network connecting said remote terminal controller to said broadband switch network.

3. A system according to claim 1, wherein said broadband session controller includes:

means responsive to signals from said remote terminal controller for requesting processing information from said broadband service control point; and

means responsive to processing information from said broadband service control point for instructing said broadband switch network to establish a broadband connection between said controller and said video information provider.

4. A system according to claim 1, wherein said broadband session controller includes a session manager for managing communications with said remote terminal controller and said broadband service control point, and a network connection manager to establish broadband connections between the remote terminal controller and at least one of said broadband session controller and said video information provider.

5. A system according to claim 1, further comprising:

an intelligent peripheral connected to said broadband service control point, said broadband service controller, and said broadband switch network.

6. A system according to claim 5, wherein said broadband service control point includes means for instructing said intelligent peripheral to send information to said remote terminal controller.

7. A system according to claim 6, wherein said information includes data or video information.

8. In a broadband system including a broadband switch network, a user display controller corresponding to a user display terminal, a broadband session controller, a broadband service control point, and a video information provider, a method of providing broadband information to said display terminal comprising the steps of:

transmitting a service request instruction from said user display controller to said broadband session controller;

requesting at said broadband session controller processing instructions from said broadband service control point;

transmitting interface information to said user in response to first processing instructions from said broadband service control point;

establishing a broadband connection between said video information provider and said user display controller in response to second processing instructions from said broadband service control point.

9. A method according to claim 8, wherein said interface information is provided by either said broadband service control point or said broadband session controller.

10. A method according to claim 8, where said step of establishing a broadband connection includes the steps of instructing said broadband network switch to establish said broadband connection.

11. In a broadband network including a video information provider, a broadband switch network, and a remote video controller associated with a remote video terminal, a broadband session controller comprising:

means for managing user sessions initiated by a user at said remote video terminal;

means for establishing broadband connections between said remote video controller and the video information provider in response to control information provided by a broadband service control point connected to said broadband session controller.

12. In a broadband network including a video information provider, a broadband switch network, a remote video controller associated with a remote video terminal, and a broadband session controller, a method of providing broadband information to said remote video terminal, comprising the steps of:

responding to control signals from said remote video controller associated with said remote video terminal;

requesting processing instructions from said broadband service control point in response to first control signals from said remote video controller;

instructing said broadband switch network to establish a broadband connection between said video information provider and said remote video controller in response to processing instructions from said broadband service control point.

13. A method according to claim 12 further comprising the steps of requesting processing instructions from said broadband service control point in response to predetermined control signals from said remote video controller.

14. In a broadband network including a video information provider, a broadband switch network, a broadband session controller, and a broadband service control point, a video terminal controller, comprising:

means connecting said video terminal controller to said broadband switch network;

means connecting said video terminal controller to said broadband session controller;

means connecting said video terminal controller to a video terminal;

means responsive to input signals from a user for sending control signals to said broadband session controller; and

means responsive to instructions from said broadband session controller for displaying information on said video terminal.

In a broadband system including a broadband switch network, a user display controller corresponding to a user display terminal, a broadband session controller, a broadband service control point, a video information provider, and an intelligent peripheral, a method of providing broadband information to said display terminal comprising the steps of:

transmitting a service request instruction from said user display controller to said broadband session controller;

requesting broadband session controller processing instructions from said broadband service control point;

transmitting interface information from said intelligent peripheral to said user display controller in response to processing instructions from said broadband service control point.

16. A method according to claim 15 wherein said step of transmitting interface information includes the step of establishing a broadband connection between the intelligent peripheral and the user display controller via said broadband switch network.
