1. A power sharing detector for use in a Circuit comprising a power supply connected to supply a battery charger and an auxiliary device, said circuit being such that the sum of the maximum power required by the battery charger and the maximum power required by the device exceeds the maximum power which the power supply can provide, the power sharing detector comprising a voltage detection circuit connected to receive a voltage representative of the power supplied to the auxiliary device and to determine therefrom a state of the auxiliary device;

  • and means for selecting one of two charging rates for charging a battery in dependence on the voltage detected by the voltage detection circuit whereby a lower charging rate for charging the battery is selected when it is determined that said auxiliary device is in an on state so that the total power required by the auxiliary circuit and the battery charger does not exceed the maximum power which the power supply can provide.
