Abstract

A controller for a starter/generator used with an aircraft engine, includes means for monitoring field return current in a generator field winding; means for monitoring generator voltage; and microprocessor control means for adjusting generator field current as a function of the field current and voltage and field return current. The field return current and output voltage monitoring functions allow for open field, field integrity, over voltage, field weakening and torque limiting functions to be realized in an integrated programmable system configuration.

Claims

1. A controller for a starter/generator used with an engine, comprising a field winding in shunt with a free wheeling rectifier means;

means for detecting free wheeling current in said rectifier means;

means for monitoring generator voltage and current; and

control means for controlling generator field current as a function of said monitored generator current, generator voltage and free wheeling current.

2. The controller according to claim 1 in combination with a shunt-type starter/generator for an aircraft engine.

3. The controller according to claim 1 wherein said control means adjusts field current using a pulse width modulated drive signal to a field current switching device.

4. The controller according to claim 3 wherein said current monitoring means comprises rectifier means coupled to said field coil such that current flows through said rectifier means when said switching device turns off.

5. The controller according to claim 4 wherein said rectifier means comprises a free wheeling diode shunted across said field coil, said detecting means comprising means for detecting voltage across said diode.

6. The controller according to claim 5 wherein said control means strobes said switching device off during a time period in which said switching device is otherwise on.

7. The controller according to claim 6 wherein said control means strobes said switching device off for a time period that is short relative to a time period of said pulse width modulated signal that turns said device on.

8. The controller according to claim 7 wherein said control means monitors for field current during said strobe period.

9. The controller according to claim 8 wherein said strobe operation can be performed during engine start period or during a generate period.

10. The controller according to claim 3 wherein said control means increases field current according to a predetermined profile during start.

11. The controller according to claim 10 wherein said control means increases said pulse width modulated drive signal from a low duty cycle to a high duty cycle over a selected time period.

12. The controller according to claim 11 wherein said control means increases said pulse width modulated duty cycle in a linear manner.

13. The controller according to claim 3 wherein during engine start, said control means regulates generator armature current and torque by adjusting said pulse width modulated drive signal duty cycle to cause field weakening.

14. The controller according to claim 1 wherein said control means de-energizes the generator if said voltage monitoring means indicates a generator overvoltage condition and said field current monitoring means indicates free wheeling current is absent.

15. The controller according to claim 1 further comprising voltage regulator means for adjusting field current to maintain a regulated generator output voltage level.

16. The controller according to claim 15 wherein said control means monitors on/off status of said voltage regulator and monitors the generator voltage for an overvoltage condition, said control means causes the generator to de-energize if an overvoltage condition exists and said regulator remains on.

17. The controller according to claim 16 wherein said control means monitors said regulator on/off status by detecting said free wheeling current.

18. The controller according to claim 17 wherein said field current is monitored by said control means using a free wheeling diode in shunt with said field winding.

19. The controller according to claim 1 further comprising means for differentially monitoring generator feeder and generator return current for ground fault detection.

20. The controller according to claim 19 wherein said ground fault detection means produces an output signal that permits a built in test (BIT) function for detecting proper operation of said ground fault detection means by said control means.

The controller according to claim 20 wherein said ground fault detection means comprises a pair of differential amplifiers that monitor said feeder and generator currents in a complementary differential manner to produce an output that is an inverse absolute value signal that includes a circuit fault state.

22. The controller according to claim 21 wherein said ground fault detection means provides sample and hold means to detect a ground fault condition by said control means.

23. The controller according to claim 15 wherein said control means biases said regulator means such that if said control means fails said regulator means independently can regulate the generator voltage.

24. The controller according to claim 23 wherein said control means comprises means for biasing said voltage regulator means in a positive and negative direction using respective pulse width modulated control signals.

25. A controller for a starter/generator used with an engine, comprising means for monitoring field free wheeling current in a generator field winding;

means for monitoring generator voltage and current;

microprocessor control means for controlling generator field current as a function of said monitored generator current, generator voltage and field current;

a field winding and a free wheeling diode shunted across said winding;

wherein said control means adjusts field current using a pulse width modulated drive signal to a field current switching device;

said control means comprising means for detecting voltage across said diode;

said control means pulsing said switching device off during a time period said switching device is otherwise on.
