1. A method of analyzing a data set of a digitized image to identify an area of interest, the method comprising the steps of:

  • dividing the digitized image into a plurality of regions;

    calculating histogram data for frequencies of image values within each of the plurality of regions;

    organizing the histogram data for each of the regions according to a predetermined sequence of the plurality of regions to create a data set for an image in histogram space of the plurality of regions; and

    analyzing said data set for the image in histogram space of the plurality of regions to identify localities of maxima and minima in grouped image value characteristics which correspond to the area of interest within the digitized image.
