Abstract

The present invention is a technique and apparatus for monitoring and detecting the arrival of a contrast agent in a region of interest (e.g., an artery or tissues of interest). In one embodiment, upon detecting a maximum, substantially elevated or elevated concentration of contrast agent in the region of interest, a predetermined portion of the magnetic resonance image data (e.g., data which is representative of the center of k-space) may be acquired. Thus, the present invention may be employed to facilitate synchronization between collecting the central portion of k-space image data with the arterial phase of contrast enhancement.

Claims

1. A method of imaging an artery of a patient using magnetic resonance imaging in conjunction with an administered magnetic resonance contrast agent, comprising,

detecting an elevated concentration of the administered magnetic resonance contrast agent in a region of interest;

and

imaging at least a portion of the artery including collecting image data which is representative of at least a portion of a center of k-space after detecting the elevated concentration of magnetic resonance contrast agent in the region of interest.

2. The method of claim 1 wherein the step of imaging at least a portion of the artery further includes collecting image data which is representative of the center of k-space when a concentration of the contrast agent in the artery is substantially higher than a concentration of the contrast agent in veins adjacent to the artery.

3. The method of claim 1 wherein the step of imaging at least a portion of the artery includes collecting image data which is representative of the center of k-space when the concentration of the contrast agent in the artery is greater than a predetermined concentration.

The method of claim 1 wherein the step of imaging at least a portion of the artery includes collecting image data of an imaging sequence and the step of collecting image data which is representative of at least a portion of the center of k-space includes collecting the image data substantially at the beginning of the imaging sequence.

5. The method of claim 4 wherein the imaging sequence is a 3D imaging sequence.

6. The method of claim 1 further including measuring a base line signal which is representative of a response of the region of interest to at least one magnetic resonance radio frequency pulse prior to administering the magnetic resonance contrast agent to the patient.

7. The method of claim 1 further including monitoring the region of interest to detect an arrival of the contrast agent in the region of interest.

8. The method of claim 7 wherein the step of detecting an elevated concentration of contrast in the region of interest further includes detecting a change in a response of the region of interest to at least one magnetic resonance radio frequency pulse.

9. The method of claim 8 wherein the change in the response of the region of interest to at least one radio frequency pulse includes at least one of a change in a maximum amplitude of a signal and a change in a shape of a signal.

10. The method of claim 7 wherein the step of imaging at least a portion of the artery includes collecting image data of an imaging sequence and the step of collecting image data which is representative of the center of k-space includes collecting the image data substantially at a beginning of the imaging sequence.

11. The method of claim 10 wherein the imaging sequence is a 3D gradient echo imaging sequence.

12. The method of claim 1 wherein the step of collecting image data which is representative of a center of k-space includes collecting a portion of the image data while concentration of the contrast agent is substantially a maximum.

13. The method of claim 1 wherein the step of collecting image data which is representative of at least a portion of a center of k-space includes collecting a portion of the image data while a concentration of the contrast agent in the artery is substantially a maximum.

14. The method of claim 1 wherein the region of interest includes at least a portion of the artery and the artery is the aorta.

15. A method of imaging an artery of a patient using magnetic resonance imaging in conjunction with an administered magnetic resonance contrast agent, comprising,

detecting a predetermined concentration of the administered magnetic resonance contrast agent in a region of interest;

and

imaging at least a portion of the artery including collecting image data which is representative of at least a portion of a center of k-space after detecting the predetermined concentration of the contrast agent in the region of interest and while the concentration in the artery is higher than a concentration of the contrast agent in veins adjacent to the artery.

16. The method of claim 15 wherein the step of detecting a predetermined concentration of magnetic resonance contrast agent in the region of interest includes detecting an arrival of the contrast agent in the region of interest.

17. The method of claim 16 wherein the step of imaging at least a portion of the artery includes collecting image data of a 3D imaging sequence and the step of collecting image data which is representative of the center of k-space includes collecting the image data substantially at a beginning of the 3D imaging sequence.

18. The method of claim 15 wherein the step of imaging at least a portion of the artery further includes collecting image data which is representative of a portion of the center of k-space while the concentration in the artery is substantially a maximum.

19. The method of claim 18 wherein the step of imaging at least a portion of the artery includes collecting image data which is representative of a substantial portion of the center of k-space while a concentration of the contrast agent is substantially elevated.

20. The method of claim 18 further including the step of administering the magnetic resonance contrast agent to the patient in a bolus type injection and wherein the step of imaging at least a portion of the artery includes collecting image data of a 3D imaging sequence and the step of collecting image data which is representative of the center of k-space includes collecting the image data substantially at a beginning of the 3D imaging sequence.

21. The method of claim 15 wherein the region of interest includes at least a portion of the artery and the artery is the aorta.

22. An apparatus for imaging an artery of a patient using magnetic resonance imaging in conjunction with an administered magnetic resonance contrast agent, comprising,

detecting means for detecting a predetermined concentration of the magnetic resonance contrast agent in a region of interest and for generating an imaging initiation signal in response to detecting the predetermined concentration of contrast agent in the region of interest;

and

imaging means, coupled to the detecting means, for collecting image data which is representative of at least a portion of a center of k-space in response to the imaging initiation signal.

23. The apparatus of claim 22 wherein the imaging means collects the image data which is representative of the center of k-space substantially at a beginning of a 3D imaging sequence.

24. The apparatus of claim 22 wherein the detecting means generates the imaging initiation signal when the concentration of the contrast agent in the region of interest is substantially elevated.

25. The apparatus of claim 22 wherein the imaging means further includes means for collecting image data which is representative of at least a portion of the center of k-space while a concentration of the contrast agent in the artery is substantially a maximum.

26. The apparatus of claim 25 further including administration means for rapidly administering the contrast agent to the patient.

27. The apparatus of claim 26 wherein the administration means administers the contrast agent at a rate greater than about 0.05 millimoles/sec.

28. The apparatus of claim 26 wherein the administration means administers the contrast agent at a rate greater than about 1 cc/sec.

29. The apparatus of claim 22 wherein the detecting means further includes means for monitoring the region of interest to detect an arrival of the contrast agent in the region of interest.

30. The apparatus of claim 29 wherein the detecting means further includes means for measuring a base line signal.

31. The apparatus of claim 22 wherein the detecting means includes means for detecting a change in a response of the region of interest to at least one magnetic resonance radio frequency pulse.

32. The apparatus of claim 31 wherein the change in the response of the region of interest to at least one radio frequency pulse includes at least one of a change in a maximum amplitude of a signal and a change in a shape of a signal.

33. The apparatus of claim 22 wherein the region of interest includes at least a portion of the artery and the artery is the aorta.

34. An apparatus for imaging an artery of a patient using magnetic resonance imaging in conjunction with an administered magnetic resonance contrast agent, comprising,

detecting means for detecting the magnetic resonance contrast agent in a region of interest and for generating an imaging initiation signal in response to detecting the magnetic resonance contrast agent in the region of interest;

and

imaging means, coupled to the detecting means, for collecting image data which is representative of at least a portion of a center of k-space in response to the imaging initiation signal.

35. The apparatus of claim 34 wherein the imaging means collects the image data which is representative of the center of k-space substantially at a beginning of a 3D imaging sequence.

36. The apparatus of claim 34 wherein the imaging means collects image data which is representative of a periphery of k-space after collecting image data which is representative of the center of k-space.

37. The apparatus of claim 34 wherein the imaging means further includes means for collecting image data which is representative of at least a portion of the center of k-space while a concentration of the contrast agent in the artery is substantially a maximum.

38. The apparatus of claim 37 further including administration means for rapidly administering the contrast agent to the patient.

39. The apparatus of claim 38 wherein the administration means administers the contrast agent at a rate greater than about 0.05 millimoles/sec.

40. The apparatus of claim 38 wherein the administration means administers the contrast agent at a rate greater than about 1 cc/sec.

41. The apparatus of claim 34 wherein the detecting means further includes means for monitoring the artery to detect an arrival of the contrast agent in the region of interest.

42. The apparatus of claim 41 wherein the detecting means further includes means for measuring a base line signal.

43. The apparatus of claim 34 wherein the region of interest includes at least a portion of the artery and the artery is the aorta.

44. The apparatus of claim 34 wherein the detecting means includes means for detecting a change in the response of the region of interest to at least one magnetic resonance radio frequency pulse.

45. The apparatus of claim 44 wherein the change in the response of the region of interest to at least one radio frequency pulse includes at least one of a change in a maximum amplitude of a signal and a change in a shape of a signal.
