Stent delivery method and apparatus
First Claim
1. An apparatus for delivering a stent to a site in a lumen of a vessel, said apparatus comprising:
- an elongate sheath having an elongate axis and having a distal end and distal end portion which reduces in cross-section toward said distal end of said elongate sheath and which has a central opening in said distal end of said sheath;
said distal end portion being made of a material which expands and softens by exposure to a warm, physiologically compatible liquid;
an open, but closeable, proximal end for receiving a stent on a balloon of one of (a) a balloon catheter or (b) a balloon on a wire catheter and guidewire means;
a source of warm, physiologically compatible liquid; and
,delivery means coupled to said source of warm liquid and to the interior of said sheath for supplying the warm physiologically compatible liquid to said distal end portion of said sheath.

Abstract
The stent delivery method and apparatus uses an elongate sheath having a rounded or tapered distal end portion which has a central opening and which is constructed in a manner that permits the distal end portion to expand easily. The method comprises the steps of: placing a stent on a balloon catheter or a balloon on a balloon guidewire thereby forming a stent on a balloon assembly; placing the stent on a balloon assembly in the elongate sheath having an elongate axis; pushing the sheath and stent on a balloon assembly to a desired site in the lumen of a vessel; positioning the stent on a balloon assembly at the desired site; withdrawing the sheath from the stent on a balloon assembly causing the distal end portion of the sheath to expand to pass over the stent and leaving the stent and balloon at the desired site in the lumen; expanding the balloon and stent to expand the stent to a desired diameter; collapsing the balloon; and, removing the balloon and the sheath from the lumen. The central opening permits a guidewire tip to extend therethrough.

5. A sheath for use in a stent delivery system of the type comprising:
-
balloon catheter means including a balloon and guidewire means extending distally from the balloon; a stent which is positioned on the balloon; said sheath including a tubular body for receiving the stent on a balloon and for surrounding and protecting the assembly of the stent on the balloon, a distal end portion and a distal end; a source of warm, physiologically compatible liquid; and
,delivery means coupled to said source of warm liquid and to the interior of said sheath for supplying the warm, physiologically compatible liquid to the sheath; said sheath having an open, but closeable, proximal end and said distal end portion reducing in cross-section toward said distal end of said elongate sheath and said distal end having a central opening therein; and
,said distal end portion of said sheath being constructed of a material that softens when said distal end portion of said sheath is exposed to a warm, physiologically compatible liquid and said central opening expanding when said distal end portion of said sheath is exposed to a warm, physiologically compatible liquid, thereby to allow for retraction of said sheath over the balloon catheter means and stent to permit balloon expansion and stent deployment. - View Dependent Claims (8, 9, 10)
