1. An apparatus for digitizing an image formed on a sheet of film, the apparatus comprising:

  • a light source for emitting a beam of light;

    a mechanism for scanning said beam of light in a scan line across said sheet of film to illuminate a plurality of pixels on said sheet of film;

    a light collection device including;

    a housing having an elongated aperture extending along said scan line, said aperture receiving light transmitted through said sheet of film from said light source;

    a diffusing member, disposed within said aperture and extending along said scan line, for optically diffusing the light received by said aperture,a linear array of photodiodes, disposed within said housing and extending along said scan line, for detecting the light diffused by said diffusing member, said linear array of photodiodes being displaced a distance from said diffusing member, and each of said photodiodes generating an analog signal representing an intensity of the detected light for each of said pixels, anda summing circuit, coupled to each of said photodiodes, for summing the analog signals generated by said photodiodes for each of said pixels to produce an output analog signal representing an overall intensity of said light transmitted through said sheet of film from said light source for each of said pixels; and

    an analog-to-digital converter, electrically coupled to said summing circuit, for converting said output analog signal for each of said pixels to a digital value.
