1. In an articulating surgical instrument having a reciprocatable articulation driver member engaged with a pivoting portion that is pivotable between first and second positions in response to linear movement of said articulation driver member, a control mechanism for moving said articulation driver member between extended and retracted positions with increased mechanical advantage at one of said extended and retracted positions, said control mechanism comprising:

  • a frame integral with said instrument containing said articulation driver member;

    a tooth on said articulation driver member; and

    a helical gear engaged with said tooth and mounted for rotation in said frame, said helical gear having a decreasing pitch over at least a portion of its length.
